Because he knows that 9 out of 10 times he'll get to continue eating whatever it was with a bunch of praise/pats as a bonus. Its worth it to him for the 1 time out of 10(realistically its a lot less than that) that he gets it taken away permanently.
But you are actually saying you do the same thing as Smeagle! 9/10 times, your dog gets the item back and or gets a bunch of pats or praises. That is no different to Smeagle takign something off the dog and replacing it with something else i.e. a treat or another toy or whatever.

Your dog leaves it, because he knows he is going to get it back. Why would he argue with that, there is no need.

If I tell my dogs to "leave it", they don't get it back (I really dont get the point in that). If I take something away from my dogs, they don't get a treat or a pat when they release it (well they might get the odd pat tbh). The item is just taken away.

My number 1 reason for training Jack to be able to take food or whatever off him at any time by anyone was simply a safety thing. At the end of the day he's an SBT i.e a dog bred to fight to the death. His ability to do damage is real, i simply wanted to have him such that no matter who came to visit there was no risk. I have achieved that! My mate who had two actual american pitbulls(both deceased now), he trained them to do the same, but he used force/violent domination to achieve the same result. I can't say either dog was more reliable, his and mine i think are pretty much bomb proof. I can however say mine has much more personality than my mates

I think there is a difference in only being able to take a toy/food if you substitute it compared to if you someimtes give it back. I think the latter teaches your dog that you give and take as you please, whereas the former teaches your dog that it can decide to keep whatever it is unless you have somethign to give in return. I do beliebe there is a big difference
