    Default Hip Replacement Surgery?

    Evening all,

I was wondering if anyones beloved pooches had ever had hip surgery. My beautiful boy Sam has progressed to needing a hip replacement on his left hip. His history is a broken left leg when he was around 7months old, which we had a specialist orthopedic surgeon do the surgery because he was a pup. It healed well, but around 12-18months later he started limping and at first we thought it might have been the metal plate they put on the broken limb but at the tender age of 2 he was diagnosed with hip dysplasia.

We managed him on metacam when needed since then, but at the begining of the year he went onto daily metacam. This last week he started limping and became quite lame. I took him to the vet yesterday and they xrayed his left and right leg (his left leg is the one that is lame) and it showed quite pronounced dysplasia in his left joint and mild/moderate in his right. Basically on his left hip, instead of the ball sitting 2/3 of the way into the socket, it is sitting barely a 1/3 of the way in and his body has started to grow this extra hook of bone of compensate, which isnt working. He isnt eligible for salvage surgery (cut the head of the femur off and let the muscles support the joing) because his right leg isnt strong enough to support the left, even though its not as bad. So he needs a full hip replacement on that side and down the track when the right becomes more painful he can have salvage surgery on that side because the new hip will adequately support the weight. His surgery is going to be in Sept/Oct at a specialist in Brisbane.

My question is basically, what can I expect? Especially immediately post operation and in the short weeks following it. I am waiting to have his surgery after I finish my uni semester because I want to take two-three weeks off to just be able to sit with him and nurse him. But I guess I am little scared.

    Thanks in advance.

Edited to add, in the interim we have him on Pentosan injections as well as daily Onsior instead of the metacam.

I know hip replacements work well on people. They don't last all that long though, but 15 years should be more than enough for a dog.

This is the first time I've heard of anyone paying for it to be done on a dog. Wow.

He'd probably need the same rehab as when he broke his leg. People who have hip joints done from arthritus are up and about very quickly and comparitively pain free, they are so happy. They go from not walking to back to normal pretty much.

I have a friend in Obedience who has had bilateral hip replacement in both hips. He is now back doing Novice Obedience......He seems quite comfortable and happy.
As Hyacinth said in people they are up and about really quickly now. Having been nursing for 36 years, I still remember the "olden" days when everyone stayed in bed for what seemed like forever. things have changed so much

Someone I worked with had a pooch who had both her hips replaced. First one then the other.

While recovery was slow she lives a normal live. She still walks and plays like a normal dog. Although she is a little luckier than normal, she visits their office a few days a week.

I do know it was VERY expensive. They have spend around 25k on this dog (it also had knee problems).

Michelle - Yep, its going to cost around $4-5000 for his left side. He is going to be worth a fortune by the end as his broken leg cost us around $3000. The salvage surgery is a little cheaper at $1500-$2000.

He is completely worth it though.

Oh I know they are worth it! If Johnny got hurt I would do the same thing.

    Hope it all goes well
