I have never paid for a dog.

    WRONG!

A free holiday cottage in a small alpine town was thrown in.

Bloody owner never came back for her as promised.
Relocated her back to the farm with us about 10 years ago.

That's a very interesting way to look at it Di, I like it.

When it comes to the value of a dog I guess it is in the eye of the beholder.
I would probably pay that much for a dog if I had the money, but at the moment no way.

Trained guard dogs are expensive (granted, not THAT expensive) my OH was looking into getting a schutzhund trained dog from Germany, we were looking at about 30k minimum.
Just importing a dog into Aus costs about 10k without the cost of the dog on top of it.

I couldn't justify paying a huge amount for "just a dog", but one with training in a hard to get into field, or one proven in a field with titles and awards I would pay more for.

I have only had to pay for one of my 3.
One was bought by my mum and then I *stole* him when I moved out of home.
    Another my mum bred herself.
And the third I purchased from a breeder.

I'm not sure how much I would pay.

It would depend on how badly I wanted the dog I guess. I had considered a Griff for $1400 and the cost didn't phase me.

I paid around $800 for Boofy and that was 8 years ago. Monte and Olivia weren't purchased, they were rescues, but I have paid out a substantial amount in vet fees and this is ongoing.

Hard to say, at this stage I would more interested in a rescue dog than a pedigree one. I don't need a dog for hunting or a trained (eg. assistance dog) dog, no interest in breeding or showing.
