I can see why people may not feel as sorry for the other critters in the pet store. For example, the rats and mice in the glass fish tank. If someone was to buy one, the chances of them living in the same type of setup are high. On the other hand, no one buys a pet shop puppy with the intention of it living in a glass box for the rest of its life.

I for one think no animals should be available for purchase at a pet store. but i don't have anything against specialty type stores selling animals, i.e - a stock farmers selling baby chicks.

Even when i was searching to buy a rabbit, many pet stores had them in class boxes with shredded paper and pellets in a bowl. Anyone who knows anything about rabbit health knows that pellets should be a very limited part of their diet, with hay needing to be in constant supply. I ended up buying my rabbit from a store none the less, but a store that specialises in rabbit/exotic animal care that has an on site vet attached to it.

I have often wondered what happens to the animals that aren't sold. Surely every pet shop cant have a 100% turn over rate...

I'm the same as Pugger, I hate cats... snobby, pretentious, thieving little horrid balls of fur...

Doesn't mean I wish any harm on them though.

Our neighbors cats get into our our wheelie bin all the time, we have had people suggest leaving asprin wrapped in meat in the bin.
Now I hate them, I get angry having to pick rubbish up from all over the front lawn... but I would never, ever do that.

I bought my rats from a pet store in town.

Only difference was I knew where they were coming from.
Rats are hard to find where I live, this lady does breed regularly, but she doesn't "farm" them and you can tell they are well cared for.

Last time I was there she was dropping off 4 new babies... she didn't have them in a cage or anything, they were driven to the store crawling around inside her jacket.
I was also given a care sheet on rodents which was a pleasant surprise.

I admit there are whole lots of critters that I'm not fond of, rabbits, foxes, cats, mice, rats, starlings, sparrows, possums. But I can't bring myself to run them over. But if I catch one, no problems with the idea of taking them to the vet for humane dispatch.

The last rabbit I caught - got returned to its owners alive and well though somewhat traumatised from being pursued around the back yard by a very excited puppy (who didn't touch it). If I hadn't found them, another neighbour gave me the number of a local? "rabbit rescue". So I would have called there. And if that hadn't worked it would have been off to the vet for dispatch/rehoming. They relented when I said I was going to fill the sulo bin up with water if they weren't willing to help. I suppose I could have taken it to RSPCA too but I didn't think of that at the time.

So I'm a bit of a hypocrite when it comes to dispatching animals I think should not be allowed to roam free in Oz. Ie I don't do it. (mice excepted)

You dont like possums... sad! But understandable if they're pulling your roof apart or such.
I hate seeing rats in aquariums with pine shavings it just makes me so angry. My two have a 8 level mansion to themselves which they love. But then again I have bait boxes out (the dog proof kind) to try and kill the rats living in my palm tree so yes I guess I am a hypocrite as well

Excellent.. living in style! They make the best cages these days. I cant go out shopping without seeing something I want for one animal in particular....and then I have to buy the others all something to as I feel guilty...

i dont actually have a problem with animals being sold in pet shops.

I just have a problem with where they come from, and no checks. If they all came from a reputable source and the shop staff had vetting processes in place etc, then there s no problem IMO.

I am not just a dog lover but an animal lover (though dogs are my fave). In fact I place the same value on ALL life, so a cat is worth just s much as a dog, as a mouse, as a bug as a human.

I don't like anything that makes noise outside my bedroom window at 3am. And that includes possums. Nothing like two Darth Vadars having a fight - right under your window, or taking flying leaps from the roof to the middle of the metal tank cover. GONG!!!!!!

And they crap all over my dog club grounds so Frosty spends most of her time tracking and or cleaning up after them. Yuck.
