    Default When to Heatworm / Worm Puppy?

    have heard a few differing views on when to start heart worming your pup, our little puppy is 10 weeks old we have been told to start heart worm at 17 weeks using the monthly doses however I googled a few web sites and they are suggesting as young as 10 weeks?

    Also when do you worm pups is it 6, 8, 10, 12 weeks and then every three months?

    thanks

    Worming should start before the pups are even born, by worming the bitch while pregnant, and continued periodically for life.

    In general, the schedule would be;
    - weekly until 6 weeks of age
    - fortnightly until 12 weeks of age
    - monthly until 6 months of age
    - every 3 months until 12 months of age and then perdiocially depending on the worm infestation of the area you live and how much time your dog will get the chance to sniff other dog's butts and droppings.

    What Anne said.

    But this is something you should discuss with the puppy's breeder - ie to find out what has been done so far, and what follow up is expected. And with your chosen vet. Ie same plus also ask same questions about vaccinations, and flea treatments.

    There is a monthly heart wormer. Some of the flea spot ons come with heart worm protection eg Revolution, and there is an annual injection that starts with two shots, and seems hideously expensive but if you total up for fleas, heartworm and digestive worms treatments, it may work out evenly. Annual injection is good for people who are a bit forgetful about these things. I put the reminder for the vax into my phone. Though I did pick my birthday, so I ought to be able to remember that for my dog. Lets celebrate by spending lots of money at the vet...

    I just noticed the heartworm question...

    Heartworm does not need to commence until around the 6 month of age mark although it depends largely on the area and the time of the year.

    Heartworm is transmitted by mosquitos, so if you live in an area with lots of mozzies and it is warm, then start earleir rather than later.

    In the southern states, we don't see mozzies until we get closer to Summer, so at this time of year I am not inclined to give hw preventatives. As we get closer to the warmer months, they will come out in droves though and I will begin to does my dogs regularly again.

    I prefer to give a monthly preventative, rather than yearly injection. However, as Hya said, this is al best dicussed with your vet.

    Worm lava live in the mothers leg muscles when she has pups they migrate and usually infect the pups, therefore we worm the mother regularly during pregnancy and then worm the pups every 2 weeks until they are 8 weeks, at that stage the new owners take over and we recommend that they continue every 2 weeks until 3 months of age, then every three months for life.... Heartworm is different... it takes 6 months for a heartworm to reach the age to actually do damage, that is why it is safe to worm them at 6 months for the first time... once you begin you need to follow the manufacturers guidelines and worm either daily (don't think many use this option any longer) or monthly for your dogs life... alternatively you can have a heartworm test done six monthly...

    There are mozzies here all year round and I thought I was in a southern state.
