    Default Pet Insurance

    Since getting Gigha (and watching Bondi Vet) I am seriously thinking about pet insurance.

    Who has it, with which company? Who has made a claim and it went well or bad? Am I better off putting $10 a week in fund instead?

    Opinions and experiences please;
    Thanks Kerrie

    Best coverage I've found is with these guys: Petplan Insurance Australia

    I was with Medibank but cancelled it. They cover nearly nothing and even what they say they do cover they will reject claims for.

    I am with Medibank and just claimed for almost $900 for Phoenix and got it back within 10 working days.... In saying that Angela is not the first person to say that and I may look at changing at the end of the policy depending on if I can get full cover from Petplan.

    I've never made a claim myself. My vets informed me that Medibank are the least reliable as far as coverage goes.

    ETA: I put $20 a fortnight into a special account that I've set up. It has a standard atm card to access it and at this point has about $4000 saved in there. Once it hits $5000 I'll be stopping the contribution to it until I have to use it. Hopefully that'll never happen. I use this account for 'emergency' things. Like taking Batty to the vets when he was teething and in a tonne of pain. Personally I think this is the best way to do it. You don't have to worry about making claims, whether they'll be approved etc.

    Oh, insurance for the first year is a good idea though - puppies get into a lot of trouble given half a chance and you'll get more coverage through insurance than if you've just started saving

    I have cover with the RSPCA - Having said that I have never had to make a claim. I am hoping not to!

    A savings account is a great idea - but I can't trust myself. I'd want to take a holiday with a large sum of money rather than save it.

    We are with the RSPCA and had vet bills totalling $26,000 of which we got back 80%, no issues with claiming as long as your vet confirms the paper work.

    I am throwing up some healthcare plans and the rspca has alot going for it. If you don't mind, could you tell me if for example: expensive surgery-lets say hyperthetically, broken bones, say through a car accident, total costs 11,000 dollars..do you have to pay the 11,000 to the vet, in which case not many people have sitting around, or their need to insure, I guess would not be as warranted. Or, is it like hicaps for patients, can you just pay the vet the other 20% because your pet plan pays up first leaving you with the difference only? Cheers

    Hi Dakota, we had two big issues the first was knee reconstruction and the second was major surgery for growths on the spine, we also claim for minor things when we go to the vet. You do have to pay the full bill up front which in our case was to SASH they offer payments plans but we put it on the card and claimed immediately, we got the money before the card bill was due.

    We have two dogs now and both are in the RSPCA plan, touch wood I hope I never make a major claim again

    I am with Medibank Private....I sofar have not made a claim, but my friend with GSD's has had two major hip surgeries and claimed with no issues.

    The RSPCA sounds good too
