It costs me approx. $5000 to care for my TB, that gets ridden 3 times a week, what I would call lightly(1 hour, 60% trotting, 20% cantering, 20% jumping). Agistment, farrier, dentist, vet, worming, feed etc.
My QH is no where near that, maybe $1000
The first year of owning my TB cost approx. $8000(rugs, equipment etc.)
This is a 2nd grade horse, that makes no money for me.
The year my horse was born, his sire's stud fee was $27,000.
These are EXPENSIVE horses. They are not treated like crap. They are treated better than any other paddock pony(including my boy).

As i said earlier, its not the race that should be petitioned against, its about what happens to them after they leave the track.
I'm sorry Myf many are treated very poorly whilst in work also. Money is disposable income & tax detucable with most in the industry & the real money made is not at the race track within the TB industry. Most retire with gut ulcers, arthritic joints, damaged legs & very poorly educated. It's a saying amongst the insiders that a horse only needs 2 gears & a forward button to race. Not every horse goes to the races to win also & a non winning horse is treated very poorly back at the yard even if that is his job to be a losers at the races. The money & curruption within the racing industry is terrible & many horses are victim to their crooked ways.
I have spent alot of time in some of the big name studs & they really are no better just better at hiding the not so savory husbandry practices.
I used to sell feed to hound owners & they diffently add weetbix to everything & only those race ready are feed anything worthwhile but when spelling back to the crude.
You should just get down to your local track around 4.30 am to 6.30 am & watch & listen, you'd be very surpriced the way they talk about their horses & treat them. Just stay in the background & observe as I know every race track has at least 1 dodgy trainer.

Greyhounds arent that much different to the rest of the dogs in rescues, the same could be said about all breeders across the board, do we ban people breeding pedigree dogs because a few do the wrong thing??
Instead of just wanting to ban everything what about suggesting options that may prevent cruelty yet allow the sport to continue i mean this is not some backyard dogfight this is a major industry that employs thousands and contributes to the economy.
Sorry you will never get my support just banning something without even offering alternatives.
How would you feel tomorrow if a minority came along and closed down your business because there were some rogues amongst it, and it was all you knew??? How would you feel being punished for others doing the wrong thing when youve strived to do the right thing????
I totally agree banning is not the way forward but it must change for the TB's & Greyhounds because the way it stands now is disgusting.

i have signed. I have been looking into adopting greyhounds from GAP if were to get a second dog and from what I can tell on their website these poor racing greyhounds are not treated well at all. No animal should be bred only to be killed or discarded just because the no longer fulfil their original "purpose" anymore. Surely that can be defined as animal cruelty?

Are you a member of PETA by any chance?
A whole breed abused and used? Are you f-ing kidding me?

Pull your head out the sand and actually go visit some Greyhound trainers.

Some would be very bored as pets only. Many dogs thrive on having a job to do.

I think Greyhounds would become solely(sp?) pets if there was no racing. They are rarely used as hunters anymore.

Yes like many dogs their really isn't place in society today for the jobs that they where once breed for.
I know a few that breed a thicker boned greyhound looking dog for hunting they call them Australian Staghounds or Kangaroo dogs & they are very fast dogs that kills rabbits every sun up & sun down.

Well, if being accused of being PETA for not supporting greyhound racing, then so be it.
I'm now banning myself from this forum.

FFS I can scarcely believe what I am reading here! Support for the greyhound industry from people I would've thought knew better. Disgusted is not the word for it.

Valuable animals? They may be, at the very pinnacle of the game, but for the countless thousands of those not lucky enough to make that top couple of percent? They have far less value than even a poor thoroughbred. Dogs are cheap to keep (yes, greyhounds do perform on cheap feed, a long performance life is rarely a concern) and fast to breed, there is no value in the majority, just the select few.

Hands up how many here have an inside view of what really happens to the VAST majority of racing dogs? Very few, obviously.

Greyhounds do not deserve the exploitation and mistreatment they receive at the hands of humans, in the name of nothing but money. Fullstop. Don't give me the "they love to run" b**lsh*t, my dogs also love to run, all sighthounds do.

Do they deserve less regard than any other breed because of it? No. But that is the wider society view of the greyhound.

Worldwide the greyhound industry is absolutely rife with abhorrently cruel practices. And yes, I personally know a few people who treat their hounds like gold, but I can say from bitter first hand experience that they are the minority.

Get onto youtube and find some videos of greyhoundwelfare worldwide - include the Spanish ones, Galgo Espanol, in that search. And Ireland. These scenes are all too familiar to some of us, who wish we could unsee some of the things we have seen happen to this graceful and peace loving breed.
