Thread: Petition Against New Greyhound Racing Track

That figure has been thrown around for years.
I have heard stories from people involved in rescue and the industry and seen signs of cruelty.
I went to my first race last year out of curiosity, I was disgusted. We went into the area where they go to be vet checked after the race. The line was long.Walked out.
I have vet nurse friends who have worked in vet clinics where they PTS greyhounds every day and have left.
Racing in the states has been banned in all but 7 states.

    Here is a link..GRAPHIC PICS.

I loathe horse racing too.....We get so many of the poor horses that were mistreated. I know not everyone, but there is a large volume of trainers who don't give a d...n about the horses. For every winner there are so many horses bred and just pet meated, where they go into those truck that drive to Adelaide all squashed and terrified.

Sorry I should get off my soapbox........A large part of the race horse industry is not that different from BYB's in the dog world.

And yes I know there are some good horse trainers around and I do not condemn them, just as there are good dog breeders. But We have been around a lot of those stables (hubby used to do equine dentistry and training for some stables) and what goes on in a lot of them, even the well known ones is ugly. We just couldn't handle it, but were making no inroads at all reporting or trying to change things. So now we just do not get involved.

Back to topic. I will sign the petition

As best I can tell from the link - nobody really knows how many greyhounds are treated badly. Or if it is any better or worse than puppy mills.

Not sure about what disgusted you about the vet check line - you haven't said. I've seen horses being vet checked at sporting competitions and I didn't find it disgusting.

If people are being cruel - why not target that instead of banning the whole sport. It's like banning all cars because some people drive them dangerously.

And when you say "states" do you mean the USA? It's a bit hard to take their animal rights movements seriously when they try to ban roo culling and sheep muelsing and do nothing about the feed lot industries or cruelty to humans.

Well, each to their own I will not suport the opening of another track. Nor will I support the sport.

I have seen enough, read enough and heard enough.

I will and I do promote them as pets.

I love horse racing and greyhound racing.. We were even thinking about getting a racing dog.
Yes of course there are good people and bad people is every animals sport.

Just think of the jobs that the track would of made. Im not taking about the trainers. I'm talking about the women who run the canteen and so on.

Also people need to realize that America has different animal welfare rules to Australia.

Not too much different to what goes on here.

Hardly anyone shows up to the races, it's such a poor mans sport.

I care more for the animal and how it is treated.
Greyhounds are considered a lesser dog and I don't even think they come under the companion animals act, which is pretty poor considering they are the oldest purebreed.
The bad far outway the good.

There are saleyards that sell horses for petmeat and those horses go on a big truck to SA. All jammed together. And some are just bought out of the paper or form the stables, there is no difference......

I have been at some of those sales and I have seen the truck...It is sad, really sad to see these confused horses. We have been in the middle of the horse industry, working for about thirty years. And i know it is not everyone, but there is a high percentage of cruelty in the horse race industry. it is all about making money and a lot of the TAB money goes to the Government. So they won't make any changes either

We have re-trained quite a few racehorses at our place and you can just tell by how they are as to how they have been treated.

The same goes for the greyhounds, just ask some of the greyhound rescue people, though most of those keep quiet to protect the ability to be able to rescue. because if they said too much, they would not be able to do rescue
