Neat album, love the horse shots,I recently got on a horse trained only for western style riding as in reigning events ect. I could not even get him to move until instructed by his owner on what to do, have riden all my life but on station horses mustering ect. this horse does not respond at all to the usual signals one gives the outback station type of horse, just blew me away 8>) have also ridden my sisteres show horse no problems, just did not realise there are so many different ways to train a horse before, not only to do different things, that is self evident, but as in what to do to give commands.

Yes we mainly use our legs, hardly use the reins, even stop with our seat. Mike's horses cross train and they quite happily allow both styles of riding. No good having horses a lot of people cannot handle. that is what happened to Doc....he was sold on and the new owners could not manage him. totally confused him and he became a rogue horse. took a whole year to get him back to not bucking and it has taken another two for him to totally trust us. The horses we have at home now are the horses who could not be re-trained for anyone to ride..they are here in their forever home, safe. All except the Mares and horses we bred are rescue horses screwed up by people and messed up.
So we cannot sell them on. they would not cope with being badly treated or confused again. Especially Doc, Brady and Jack

I wish more people would take you & Mike's approch with their horses about cross training.
There are alot of horses around today that can only be ridden in an arena without having a total meltdown. I have a black shettland that would shake & throw herself down whenever not able to flee she was that messed up. She is a paddock buddy for young horses these days & alot more relaxed but she'd never cope if she had a harsh owner again.

Yep so she will be your forever....

That is what happens with all this Natural training. Which is fabulous to use to start a horse and to give them balance. but it is of no use selling a horse that is not used to a bit or collected rein to Joe Average. This horse will them rear or run off and be branded a lunatic. When in the right hands he was probably a gentle soul.
We get horses here for re-training and mike will spend days on just trying to figure our how the ground training was done. you ask most people what number horse owner they are to a horse and it will be fourth or fifth. That means that a lot of horses have ended up in limbo. because what they were originally taught is no longer used by the current owner and all of this leads to wrecks or at least horses that will not do what the owner THINKS they are asking.
Horses have it even worse then dogs. Because on average dogs do not get sold on and sold on again, only to be sold again........How many people do you know, who have their horses forever? Horses have a sad life. We get to see the ones where someone at least tries to fix it.
We have another rule at our place. We never re-train without the owner being trained with the horse. no good starting the whole scenario again. So they learn along with the horse. We do the same for horses that have been sold from us. The owner is taught how to ride that particular horse. we have had people come here for weeks after a purchase and some we have halted the purchase, because they were not able to "get it". As I have said before, I am not a good sales person. So we do very little of that. But we have made some great teams, forever teams and we keep in contact and sometimes they come back for updates

Yes your right horses do get a hard trott with being sold on. Money would not buy most of my horses but the right person & I'm likely to give it away, lol. I like seeing someone really click with their mount & think the idea of training the rider as well is a great approach. An approach much more likely to produce a happy horse & rider team.
Yes my Shetty girl Star is a forever horse now & so much different to the wild mare I was told to pick up at the sale yards. She was meant to be droped off but when I got to the address it was a single mum & kids wanting a pet. With a little chat & $$ I had myself a very tortured mare covered in itch, dear me. I am longer asked to do the sale yard drop offs thank goodness, lol.
