Thread: Vent! Silly People

    Default Vent! Silly People

So yesterday afternoon after 6 pm I got in my car with my two dogs to take them to an off leash dog park to have a run around together (yes I have a backyard but I like to take them somewhere different to stimulate the mind and to do some generalized training). I was looking for a park with no other dogs in it as Phoenix is only 4 months and Keira can be a bit overbearing. I parked up under a tree with the windows down a small way (so there was fresh air but Keira could only get her nose out a little bit) at a local park and as you cannot see the park from the street quickly jumped out to have a look to see if there was anyone in the park. As I have walked across the road a lady is walking up the street and I could see her intent almost immediately she was thinking about sticking her hand in to pat Keira. She walks up and lo and behold what does she do, sticks her bloody hand in just as I was about to yell out "Are you a bloody m***n" she walks off. NOW Keira is not at all HA she has never even so much as snapped at a person. She once barked at my partners friend but got over it once she met him (and he was dodgy anyways) but how does this lady know that. For all she knew the dog could have ripped her bloody hand off. And even if Keira has never been HA she may have been feeling threatened etc by the way the lady approached or she could have felt put out by the lady sticking her hand into the car. Either way this lady had absolutely no idea what the dogs reaction would be and had Keira snapped or bitten her she would have screamed bloody murder and Keira and I would have been left to deal with that the rest of our lives, as she could and probably would be declared dangerous after something like that.
Now I know some of you will say you shouldn't have left her in the car etc etc but I was literally out of the car for less than 2 minutes I had no intention of leaving her there for any longer than that, it was after 6 pm so it was cool, I made sure that Keira could not get out of the car and could not even get her whole head of the window and I could see the car the whole time. Anyways that is my vent, I just cannot honestly believe people are so silly as to do something like stick your hand in a car with a strange dog, I would be loath to do that to a dog that I know or even a dog whose handler has said it is ok for me to do that, let alone a random dog that I walk past on the street. I have left Phoenix out as she just sits on the front seat watching me and not worrying about anything else.

What would you have done in this situation? Has this happened to you? Has this happened to you and the worst happened (ie the dog snapped or bitten someone)?

Thanks for reading/listening to my vent.

I totally agree, I hate it when poeple stick their hands in dog crates, car windows & through gates as it could easily be seen as a threat to a dog[who is in their own territory & are not exspecting a hand to suddenly appear] without asking or even looking towards the owner.
I had to stop showing Bubba as he hated it in general but 1 of his real pet hates was when a judge goes from dog to dog[all entire strong breed males] mouthing them without washing her hands. Bubba never bit 1[thank god] but he did growl a couple of times before I learnt to antisapate it.
I had a dope but his hand into a locked car with window ajar[I was a cross the road watching] with 2 rotties I had just picked up from the pound. He got his hand out just in time, lol.
I also hate it when parents let kids pat your dog without asking.

Oh gosh what a silly man sticking his hand into a car with two Rotties, lucky he got his hand out.

As I said Keira is definitely not HA she is extremely placid with people, actually I think she thinks she is a person. But dogs are instinct driven and if she felt threatened she could have snapped or bitten. People have in the past asked me if they could pat her and I am fine with that as she is with me and as such feels protected and safe and has no reason to feel threatened in any way and if I did feel that she felt threatened the answer would be NO.

YES people who are happy to let their kids pat strange dogs without asking silly silly!

What a silly thing to do.Though do you think she was just checking that the window was open and it was cool in the car as to her two dogs were alone in a car?

I could get that but she saw me park the car so she knew that the car had only been parked for a very short period of time. If she was honestly concerned sticking her hand in was still silly because the dog still could have bitten her, waiting to see how long I was going to be would be a better solution then putting a dog in a possibly uncomfortable position.

I know I would have waited by the car rather than stick my hand in if I was worried.

Sorry I did not realise she saw you park the car.I guess some people are just odd and you can find no reason for their actions. The worrying thing is if one of your dogs had bitten her(which you could not blame them)would she have complained about them.

Sorry I didn't mean my answer to your post to come off aggressive if it did I probably should have put in my original post that she saw me park the car.

Yeah that was my main concern but all is well that ends well I guess. I do wish I had told her off just so that in the future she would think before doing something so silly, so that no one elses dog is put in the same situation.

No you did not come across as aggressive at all.

It is always easy to think afterwards I should have done this or that but not at the time.

Your dogs look lovely by the way.

What I do is crack the front windows and dog is on the back seat.

I'm paranoid about kiddies teasing dogs, poking sticks through the window, or food...

My dog stays on the back seat - she doesn't even move to eat food I've left on the front seat. So I'm not too worried anyone can get to her through the front windows.

I think I would have yelled at the woman anyway to keep her hands away from my car. What if she wanted to steal it or the dog?
