Thread: Please Help Save the Gray Wolves

Default Please Help Save the Gray Wolves

The US Government is trying to deny the Gray Wolf protection as an endangered species.
This will leave the wolves again open to hunting, trapping and persecution. Culls are already being planned in several States - two States have elected to remove wolves by whatever means necessary...

What is the status of the Wolves in the US? Are they a pest? Are they endangered? Are they native? Is their food source plentiful? WHY are they doing a cull? Is it simply a consideration of safety for people? If so, what about the bear population?

I only ask as there were similar petitions in the US about the Aussie roo cull, but the roos were starving due to the drought and there were considerations that people outside Aus didn't take into account.

Sorry for so many questions, I hate to sign anything blind.

Wolves were pushed to the brink of exinction in most of the US. They are hated by farmers - think Thylacine (Tassie Tiger) kind of hatred and persecution.
Most populations now are re-introduced from captive bred stock.

Yellowstone National Park is a good example. The wolves were wiped out there - completely. After that they had all kinds of strange issues in the Park that authorities tried to manage, problems with the river banks, disappearance of beavers etc - weird and wonderful stuff.
When the wolves were re-introduced (which took years of effort from very dedicated people) they started to see a pattern... The Elk are the wolves main prey. The Elk were in profusion, not being hunted at all. They were eating the young willow trees from the willow banks and there was nothing for beaver to harvest. The beavers departed, the river systems changed, no-one could figure it out.
When the wolves came back it started to go back to normal.

The farmers who live near the Park fought tooth and nail to not have the wolves re-introduced. They claimed their children were at risk, their stock would be slaughtered etc etc.

There are huge aversions to wolves in rural USA. These folks aren't particularly interested in actual facts about what the wolves kill and eat. They rely on lots of heresay, misinformation and myth, a well as power in numbers to get what they want. Which is no Gray Wolves alive - ever.

Wolves are a vital part of the American ecosytem, as has been clearly demonstrated again and again when they have been obliterated by humans out of fear and suspicion.

Have a look on the internet - you'll find some amazing stories about the huge efforts that have gone into trying to return them to the American wilds that need them.

Why just in US??? They are very endangered allover. In Europe, although protected, thy are hunted mostly because of stupid prejudice. Fines are high, but no one gets punished

I know Fedra - especially in areas like Russia where wildlife laws aren't enforced. I was looking on Youtube a couple of days ago at Borzoi videos and there is posted videos out of Russia of real wolf coursing with hounds. They are using trapped wild wolves, and releasing them tied to a long line so even if they outrun the hounds they don't escape... These are obviously recent videos...

The main concern in the US is that once the official protection is lifted, several States are already planning eradication programs - not culling them, but wiping them out completely. It's hard to believe Governments these days would act this way but they will.

Little Red Riding Hood's big bad wolf is alive and well in the imaginations or folks who live in our supposedly modern world.
