I don't believe American Bulldogs are a registered breed in Australia. They are also not restricted or banned. So yes it is legal to have them but you must be careful depending on what state that you are in that it is not mistaken for a "Pit Bull" because they have similar physical attributes and most Council Rangers wouldn't be able to tell the difference.

are you asking about an "american bully" or an "american bulldog" as they seem to be two different breeds :S ... that picture looks like an american staffy. i would be careful about what dog you get as all these bully breeds can easily be "identified" as a pittbull and so will come under the BSL. do your research about the breed, breeders and the laws in your area. make sure your getting what your after. if you really want one of these breeds please go to a registered breeder, with papers there is no way your dog will be seized for being a pitbull

First of all, whatever is in that picture is not an American Bulldog. It looks like a very poorly bred Staffordshire or Amstaff. American Bulldogs are not a recognised breed, just the same as Bull Arabs and Coolies. They are "supposed" to have the size and shape of a Boxer but are slightly thicker, with a face more like an English Bulldog than a Boxer. (Both breeds make up the AmBull.)

There are some breeders in Australia, but they do not come papered and it can sometimes be luck of the draw in terms of looks. Some pups in a litter may be tall and short-nosed, others may be short and longer-faced.

While they are not illegal, they could easily be mistaken for a "pit bull" since that's such a blanket term these days. Especially since rangers are less than informed when it comes to what a true American Pit Bull Terrier looks like.

Also, in Australia, the ears are not allowed to be cut like the dogs in those pictures.

    Default American Bullies

I know how it feels amstaf lover. I too would like to have an American Bully in Australia. Unfortunately there are some law makers that seemed to have a personal grudge on all dogs that they consider "dangerous"., I have an American Bully I left back in the Philippines, I bought it for AU$800, registrable with ABKC. Hope dog breeders here would try to group and make a new breed better than the American Bully...

There are some Bully breeds in AU already - in addition we have AMSTAFF here with chunky (shocking breeding) if you really do your research.
just too bad we cannot import the breed, but hey why not own a pit?

American bully's are only recognised by their own registries.

If you want a bull breed fridge on legs there's plenty of amstaff breeders that breed outside of the standard. You just wont get the cropped ears.
