Thread: Importing Dogs?

  1. #1

    Question Importing Dogs?

I am considering importing a dog from Europe and was wondering if anyone has had any experiences with importing pets from overseas?

Did you organise it by yourself or did you use a pet travel company?

What were the costs and length of quarantine etc?

    Thanks

An old school friend of mine's parents are breeders and have imported dogs from overseas (the UK).
It is an expensive process, quarantine was 6 months and you need to pay for that yourself.
The dog came back with them, as they had travelled to the UK anyway to visit family, and bought the dog while they were there (had negoitated before they left).
If you didn't want to travel over yourself, I imagine you could use a pet transport company.

Importing from Europe is relatively easy, AQIS provides a checklist of the order things need to be done and an explaination of each step.
We imported from Germany 2 years ago, and are in the process of importing from Europe again now.
With the first import, I did all the paperwork, only using the travel company to book the flight, seal the crate etc....
This time, I am letting the travel company do the paperwork, and the final vet certificate that needs to be done just before flying.

Also, check AQIS website for what category the country you want to import from is in, not all Europe countries are under the same rules.

I had that idea but have given up. I can't imagine my dogs sitting in a cage on a plane for 22 hours or more without being able to look out and do their business. The other thing is that it's bloody expensive. I calculated it would cost me over 10 grand for each dog just for quarantine here in Australia, and what about other costs.

Not sure how long ago you calculated costs for quarantine, but for 30 days, the cost is $1380.00. (Spotswood, Melbourne)

Flights are the expensive part, especially from Europe. Amsterdam seems to have the cheapest flights for dogs.

We have found the dogs cope very well with the long flight and quarantine, we have brought a male in from Finland and a bitch from Germany. Both had an absolute BALL in quarantine and have the most steady, easy going natures. I guess high strung, or nervous dogs would not cope too well, but we make sure that the breeder of the dog understands what the dog needs to go through to be sure it is confident and independant enough to cope.

Newfie Devotee, I think that the quarantine costs were calculated for 6 months as per TinaG's post. Which is about right maybe a little higher according to your 30 day costs.

Yes someone told me the flight was around $7,000 from France.

My main concern is that the dog will develop nervous or negative behaviour during the flight and especially quarantine (im not sure what the living conditions are like).

For the breed that i am looking at, an animal that conforms with the standard would have a hard time being away from their owner for 30 days (if properly bonded).

Thats why im interested in anyone who has imported, commenting on how their dog coped during the process?

    Thanks everyone

I calculated the highest possible cost. Noone guarantees that dogs will be ther for just a month. The costs of check-ups in my country are high. Yes, flights are the worst part.

I'm not worried about quarantine in terms of staying there, my dogs are fine, well behaved and I know that service is more than good. I was worried about the actual time they need to spend in cage on a plane/airports without doing their business. And with all transitions (because we do not have direct flights from exporting country) it would be minimum of 20 hours which is not acceptable to me. I know my dogs wouldn't do it in such small place, they would have to really be busting. Anyway, I just couldn't afford it plus there was a question where to stay as I know how hard it is to find a place that allowes dogs, let alone two, one of them quite large and mean looking rottie. So I just gave up the idea.
