Thread: Desexing an Older Dog

    Default Desexing an Older Dog

Hi there, we have recently aquired a male pomeranian who is about 5 years old (we think) and who hasn't been desexed. We would like to get him desexed.

My understanding is that dogs should be desexed as puppies. Would it be difficult to desex a dog this age? What is the approximate cost to desex a dog? (We are struggling financially). Does the RSPCA desex dogs?

    Would appreciate your advice. Thanks.

Five years is fine to have a dog desexed as long as he is in good health. Did you get this dog from a friend, family or rescue?
Yes RSPCA does de sex dogs and so does Lort Smith Animal Hosp if you are in Vic.
Being a male and a small breed possibly around $180 - $220 at a guess.

Yeah it's fine. If he already has the urge ie. 'humps' then that behaviour won't just go away but it definitely is the most responsible thing to do

My vet charges $180. Rescue shelters sometimes give a discount if you have a concession, health care, or seniors card so it's worth ringing around.

He will be fine. I convinced my best friend to have his 7yo Chihuahua desexed, the dog is in great health (and marks on things less!).

Go to Lort Smith they do desex dogs and they are very good at looking after dogs also they are very cheap. Me and my mum took our old dog there and they were really good but she had cancer. I got a another puppy a week ago and they are so cheap I'm going to take my new puppy there to get it's needles.
