Yep there are a lot of different Aussie/Australian bulldog clubs or societies or associations. If they want to affiliate with ANKC - they're going to need to sort that out too, and it's difficult to get a room full of people to agree on details.

Some breeders seem to be members of more than one club/association/society, I think they'd be good places to start, but if you can find one of these groups that meets near you and meet the breeders and their dogs - that's the key thing in my book, and then talk to them about what they're doing to make sure they breed healthy dogs.

Bulldogs are going to be difficult when it comes to ensuring healthy though. They've been selectively bred for an unhealthy shape (big head, short nose) for so long. I recommend getting pet insurance for at least the first few years, just in case expensive problems show up that need surgery for fixing. And puppies are good at busting legs, and ACLs etc.

I have never heard of pet insurance. Is that basically writing up a contract (I personally wouldn't do it, I'd get a prof to do it) and getting them to sign it? If they don't agree to it what should I do?

Thanks so much for all the links. I'll deff check them out.

Also, again.. price range? As I consider this dog to still be a cross bred because it's not a "pure breed" right? I know the British bulldogs go for $3500 is this the same for Aussie?

Aussies go for between $1200 and $1500.
Most come with free pet insurance for the first month.

Pet insurance is a commercial product. I think Medibank does one. I've got one with Pets Insurance Australia (PIA) but there are others. Choice did an article on them in the last year or so.

They are better with higher percentage British, otherwise they turn out like Americans.

The breed is still very inconsistent because they aren't an established breed yet.

To me they are still a cross breed, because they are still being put back to a foundation dog and most are still only first or 2nd generation.

They don't come from puppy mills by the way

I'd personally go a British, because they are an established breed and you know what you are getting, although you pay a few thousand dollars more.
    You used to breed!!?

Yup not one of my most proud moments of my life, which is why it's past.

I was railroaded into it and regret it. If I knew then what I know now, I wouldn't have even gotten an AB let alone bred from her.

Aw ok, so you were a dreaded...byb?

Don't feel too bad, my parents bought Roly the pet shop puppy, but they honestly had no idea about all that stuff.
Im sure if you knew what you know now, you never would have bred her...?

Gosh of course not. I was a registered breeder with an AB "club" so not classed as a BYB, but then, when I realised they weren't a recognised breed etc and realised some other behind the scenes stuff, I was mortified.

That comment makes me wonder if you know the behind the scenes stuff that goes on with ANKC breeders Puggerup ,if you did, you would not have felt mortified at all , like in everything, there is good and bad both in the ANKC world and the AB world.
