Question How to Introduce a Dog to Cats?

Hi, hope someone can give me a few pointers. I have adopted a deaf staffy and she arrives in two weeks, I have two cats and am wondering how to introduce them without massive incident. Does anyone have any tried and true solutions? Would appreciate any help here. Thanks muchly

    hi,

I introduced a pup to two cats but I am not so sure about your case, but I think it will be on depending on your pets and their personalities.

I would make sure that the first meeting place is where cats have something to hide or jump onto. Perhaps treat (or play) your staffy while another family member attends the two cats, so that they all see this occasion a happy one.

If your cats have litter trays in the house, I will raise them as well as a dog tend to eat the cat poops (or only my boys do that). Good luck!
I love cooking but I love eating even more.

Thanks for the advice. Unfortunately its just me so will have to try and play all roles. I think I will try and walk her for about an hour before I bring her inside to try and calm the excitement factor. Hopefully that will stave off some tension although Im sure the cats will freak regardless they have lots of places to get away and have access to an outdoor area, so it may just be a case of keeping them seperate for bit? What do you think? One cat is a Russian Blue and very placid, the other is a Bengal who is very mischevious and likes to play which I suspect will please the Staffy as she's a player but so far, according to the current owners, doesn't play with cats in a bad manner, she sleeps with them :-)

Bengal...wow...I have been a cat (and dog of course) lover all my life. My Tomodachi, a blue medium short hair nursed my minis. When he died so sudden, my minis yelped day and night and I had to take him to work for a while. Anyway...sad story....all the best and don't forget the photos together.

hachna had some good suggestions, this is similar to what we did. Played with dog, had her on the leash, and gave the cats escape paths. Ziggy also had to be taught that the cats were 'above' her (more a precaution to make sure she doesn't get too rough with them), the cats would get a cuddle before her. If your staffy is already good with cats that may not be necessary.
She does go after their litter, we have to keep an eye on that.

Thanks for the feedback. Its nice to know I have a pseudo support base out there. :-) It's going to be hard work initially but I can see it being so very rewarding. I've been told to go buy a horse lead so she cant chew thru it in seconds....me thinks "Kendra" is going to end up costing me a bomb...but I don't care. Love begets Love. And I will definitely post pics once she's home xx
