Default What Breed of Dog is This?

    Hi

I have been trying to find a dog breed that I saw years ago as a child and absolutely adored.

Her name was Zena and she was BEAUTIFUL. Had a gorgeous nature.

I remember asking the owner what breed she was and he responded with "gundog"

    She was pure black.

The closest breeds I can put it down to are the Hungarian Vizsla or Weimaraner. But I don't think these breeds are black?

Perhaps someone can help me figure out the breed?

    Hi there,
she could have been a cross breed so you might have a bit of trouble finding one like her.

There are the pointers, setters, flushing dogs, retrievers, and utility dogs.
Possibilities: labrador, flat coat retriever, or a brittany... kind of look similar to what you have suggested...

Hmmm maybe cross bred, but I don't think she was.

I'm leaning more towards Weimaraner. I did a bit more google searching and there are black ones.

German Shorthaired Pointers come in black.

I don't think weimeraners come in black. Here is a link to the breed standard

You're right Ellie - no black in Weims.

If it looked like a weimeraner and was black I would think a GSP is the closest. If it was a little different possibly a Pointer?

All black or black and white - patched or roan/spotty?

I use to own a black GSP he was one of the first to be shown in Victoria... not really uncommon, but orginally they were undesirable as the black would stand out in the field and be more easily injured by the gunmen..
