    Question Heartworm Injection

Hi has anyone used the yearly heartworm vaccine for their dog. Interested to hear any good or bad experiences they have had with this. Have a new vet and he has suggested the yearly injection rather than tablets. Thanks

As a vet nurse I also strongly reccomend it.
You don't need to give monthly tablets, and you'll get reminded when you get your dog vaccinated.
    Go for it!

Banjo got it and I didn't see any ill effects but after lots of reading on it am a bit reluctant to get it for Luda.....
Easy enough giving a tablet once a month...

I think it is easy enough just to give a tablet as well. I have read too many stories about dogs having adverse reactions to it, especially when given at the same time as vaccination, as it is too much for their system to handle.

Mine gets the yearly injections with no problems at all.

I used to forget the monthly tablets all the time so it's perfect for me.

My dog had a reaction to the annual. I was talked into it about 5 years ago.
Since then have heard and read a bit more about it and wouldn't recommend it.
I use Sentinel and give it every 5 weeks (that's my choice)

Wow. Really? An allergic reaction is incredibly rare.

I am thinking about doing it for my dog. I do it normally on the first of every month but if it is more effective than the tablets I will give it a go. Does it matter on the size of the dog?
Or is it a measured dose related to size?

Thanks everyone, the consensus so far seems to be that the yearly heartworm injection is both practical and safe, reactions being rare. After posting my question on this forum i did a bit of surfing the net and found a lot of people saying they had heard the injections are unsafe, but didn't find many who said their own dog had reactions.
