Thread: What Do You Do at Night?

Default What Do You Do at Night?

    Hi Everyone,

This is probably going to sound like a really silly question but I don't have many friends who own dogs so figure I have nothing to lose by asking here

To all the people on this forum who have just one dog who lives mainly inside: what do you do with your dog for most of the evening?

I get home from work around 6pm and normally take Jax out for a walk straight away (he's in the backyard with lots of toys during the day). This will last for about 20min - 1hr depending on the weather etc. Once we get home I'll start preparing dinner and feed him around 7:30pm.
After that, it's pretty much on the couch in front of the TV for OH and I with Jax chewing on his raw hide on the couch with us.

I'm just wondering if we should be doing more to play with him at night? I mean, we'll always give him lots of cuddles and we practice his commands for 5-10mins as well but sometimes I feel at a loss for how to entertain him...or is he just happy sitting there chewing away?

Weekends are a similar story...he gets longer walks and playtime at the park but most of the day if we're at home he normally just follows us around while we do laundry and all those 'domestic' house things.

Sorry if this sounds really stupid but I just want to know if this is what normal people with pets do or if we should be doing something more?

I have 3 dogs and a huge outside pen, they rotate in and out during the day. In the evenings though is the Mother of my 2 nine month old pup's time. She just hangs with us, chewing a rawhide bone, sleeping on the couch, then sleeps on her bed in our room. I don't walk them as they have plenty of room in their pen to run and run on farm when out of it too.

I love night time with my crew. I see those 4 gorgeous faces when I come in from work and then after dinner we just relax and veg out and enjoy each other's company. I usually have at least one of them on me or next to me. It's very calm and relaxed and I love it

Sounds like your Jax is pretty happy vegging out with his rawhide and having you guys there for company. He'd be loving that I would think

After dinner etc Ziggy usually sits on the couch with us and snoozes. She seems to like just having cuddles with us. Sounds like Jax is happy, dogs don't need to be entertained 24/7.

    Thanks Tina G,

Good to know they don't need something to do all the time...so hard to know if we're taking care of him properly!!!

*sigh* if only dogs could talk!

It is pretty easy to tell how they are going by their behaviour. As Tina said, they don't have to be entertained all the time. Just like kids they find their own ways too if needed. Destructive behaviour would be a clue to boredom or needing more exercise/stimulation.

A flaked out or happily chewing or just mooching around dog means that you are doing what is right for your particular dog.

On average, I get home at 4:00. Take the dogs for a 10 minute bike ride to my horse property where we walk and play for 40 minutes then ride back home, every week day, rain, hail or shine.
I then get home, check out the forum, have a shower, have dinner, watch TV and then will usually check the forum before I go to bed.
Lady comes in at about 8-9 and then goes in the laundry before I go to bed, and she's happy with that.
A dog in the wild isn't constantly doing something are they

    Hi azu....

Well a bit embarrassing but I do a lot of Hide and Seek (no explanation needed-I hide and they need to find) with boys. Fetch on hallway (old house-long hallway!!!!) Where is it? (treasure hunting) Lately training my dogs manners at the front door and bowing.
I love cooking but I love eating even more.

Good question this and I'm glad someone asked because I wonder the same thing. Harvey will normally pick up a toy and come and put it on our knee or try and push it into your hand. He would play tug of war all night if he could. I also spend a bit of time grooming him.
