    Default Dogs and Stinging Nettle

alright i have two questions about this...
    1. does anyone know if dogs can get stung by stinging nettle?
    2. Can dogs tell the difference between Stinging nettle and other plants? because the other day my Kelpie named Dodge ran to a a patch of Stinging nettle and stopped... looked at it for a while then went around it!!! i was kind of surprised to see this! lol

Kids sure soon learn to keep away from it so I would think dogs would too, it is a very useful plant in a garden and asl makes great soup by the way

The sting caused by nettle is caused by a toxic secretion that the plant holds in it's tiny spines. These spines snap when the plant is brushed against, causing the poison to seep out.

I have little doubt that the smell of this secretion would be picked up by dogs, and like many of nature's poisons would probably not smell nice. So although he probably wouldn't get stung he would not like the nettles in general.

Being a kelpie he would be smart enough to have learned it from one experience and stay away from it in future.

If a dog can be smart as much as its owner, my dogs have no hope. I don't even know what stingy nettles look like.
