    Default Desexing

I'm just wondering why the vets wont desex dogs untill they are 6 months....yet the rspca and other rescue places ect can get them desexed @ such a younger age ? I did the ring around to all the vets in the shire and they were all the same!

    Does anyone know?

Ah yes , this good old debate

There are a some vets that will desex early , you just need to find them. But as you say,the majority will not.

There are 'apparently' too many risks involved in desexing such littlies ( unsubstantiated really) and yet many more health and ethical reasons why it shouldn't be left until later.

I personaly agree with desexing young

My vet will desex at 8 weeks. Depending on which breed of dog, its not always advisable to desex some so young. Bigger breeds dont grow properly, they end up with all sorts of problems. Some end up with incontinence. Some dogs dont end up with a personality. I prefer around the 4 to 6 mths.

Hmmmm Yes, I can see with the big breeds how it could affect them...Just the stitching alone would feel stretched as they grow soooo fast! Good point

All in all...yeah, it was just my curiosity...thanks to you both for your responses

I am absolutelly against desexing at such early age!
It doesn't have to be 6 months either, but 8 weeks is plain sick.

    Why is it sick

In rescue and now alot of breeders thankfully , early desexing is common practice with no ill effects to the dogs.

And no idiots able to breed dogs for the sake of it.

Yeah, because of those idiots, I would probably agree, but other than that, 8 weeks is waaaay too young. Maybe you cannot see any physical changes, but there are consequences, I'm sure (behavioural, and physical...)
But anyway, when it comes to rescuing and stopping "those idiots" from doing more damage, OK, but personally, I wouldn't desex my own dog before the age of 6 onths, large breeds even later.

Just thought id chuck my 2c in. I havent desexed Leo yet (10 months old), he will be done but not untill he is at least 18months, i would prefer to wait till 2years. Its only beacause i have heard in staffords and many other larger breeds it can effect their growth, more so in males (Less muscle and taller) and they may continue to act like puppys forever, much like a teenage boy, they need those hormones to become stable minded, so to speak.

Now im not saying thats true, im not saying its right or wrong, but i have chosen to wait. I think if you do wait you do have to be very responsible for your dog, make sure it is very well fenced and obviously not allowing it to run wild at the off leash park possibly getting to a young bitch in first heat (as i find many bitch owners will wait till after the first heat to desex). Its an added responsiblity really but one that I (and my OH) are willing to take on for the first 2years if it does make a difference to Leo's over all behavior and mental growth

Saying that some dogs are just overly sexed and hump everything and anything all the time. So i would say in some cases i do beleive best to get it over and done with for the poor dogs sake but not untill at least 6 months.

So...with Candy being a large breed...do you think I should wait till she's about 121sh months??
She's in a double yard..(we have the whole yard fenced with a 6 ft fence, then she is out the back behind another 6 foot fence).
When she goes on heat...can I still walk her? I wont take her to the offleash area though unless there is NO other dogs there....usually in the middle of the day!!
How long do they stay on heat?

Sorry for all the ques....It's been a LONG time since I've needed to worry about all this

Be prepared for a cycle of around 21 days odd Ozey.

You could desex her now ( IMO - remembering that muscle development has nothing to do with if you spey or not-it is about exercise and diet) with no ill affects or you could wait until after her first heat ( around 6 months - but some will not cycle until they are around the 12 months as well)

Be prapared when you walk her to be attract any entire males from within a 10 k radius. They can come out of the wood work once a dog in heat is around. Be prepared to have to hunt off dogs that are extremely determined to get her .
