    Default Possibly Going Deaf

Curiosity got the better of me the other day while trying to work out why Cassie is barking. It seems at times as if she cannot hear people.

Personaly I thought it was her being naughty, but we tested it the other night...
Cassie was in the other room, Call loadly comes straight away. Call normally have to call for a while before she responds.
In the same room at a whisper call her no response (sisters dog heard from other room and came to see what was going on). Was able to sneak up behind her without her noticing.

Could this be a sign of deafness starting??? or just her being naughty???

Cassie is approx 4 and a half (not really sure on age as she came from LDH) a staffy x australian cattle dog (we think) she is red and white in colour.

    Any suggestions anyone????

Deafness in cattle dogs is higher than a lot of other breeds but normally seems to start at birth.

Have you done the rustle of a plastic bag trick?

Have you tried having her sit at your feet then have someone make a quiet but increasing sound off to her left, watching to see when she twitches her ear to show she noticed it, then try with the right?
That was the way we always tested my fathers old cattledog when I was a kid. He was going deaf, but he was pretty old. If you do this every month or so you can see if their hearing is getting worse. Or if when you are calling her she doesnt even twitch her ears untill you yell but is then happy to come when she is called it could indicate that something is wrong.
If you are worried about her maybe you could get your vet to do some tests and tell you conclusivly what is going on

    thanks ashaari,

I'll try that tonight. Also finding she is spooking and normal things when we are walking... like a stump. but its not noise just the sight of it. I actually have to take her over to it before she settles. A bAg flapping on a tree. wasn't the noise, just the sight of it moving... She didn't hear it...
