I recommend BARF and don't believe in leaving out food all day for them. If you need to give them something to keep them occupied through the day, try a raw meaty bone....

I'll 2nd Staffwild's advice about feeding BARF/RAW. As for treats i give my dogs raw chicken necks, fruit, carrot sticks, cheese. A "kong toy" stuffed with food is a good thing to keep pooches occupied.

My dogs have dry food available 24/7. I have never had any problems with this in 30 years and many dogs. Mine also receive a feed of raw a day, be it a chicken wing, meaty bone, some lamb. Sardines and a raw egg are added to the dry, about weekly as it is great for their shiny coats.

These two american sites will help you work out what to look for on the ingredients list.

Personally, I think Beneful has one of the worst ingredient lists. I make my own dog food casserole to replace the tinned food. Tinned food tends to come back to haunt us in the most unpleasant ways. There are loads of dog food recipes on the net for making your own. All of them would have better ingredients than tinned food. But if you don't have time to make your own dog food, you can use raw mince or chicken wings (note some dogs have trouble eating chicken wings so you will need to watch the dog to make sure it chews properly or maybe cut into smaller pieces). And they're high fat so you don't need to feed much. And you won't need to feed as much as what the dog tins say either.

    For treats I recommend.....

My dogs adore and will work for them. My only problem is them trying to rip the bag out of my hand to get them all at once.
