Thread: Becoming a Small Home Breeder.

First of all thank you to the people who had some constructive criticism and some positive posts.

I'd like to say that I am not wanting to go into this hoping to make an actual living off breeding westies. It's just something that I am wanting to do, and the fact that there is a possibly of some return is fine. My parents who will be funding this know fully well there is a huge risk in that the brood might have problems with the litter ie: vet bills for c section etc. They know they could possibly break even or even be out on cash but they know this and they know there are these risks involved. Regardless they understand that there will be at least 3 dogs now that need to be taken care of for the rest of their life. My family would NEVER give a dog away or randomly throw it away and hope someone else picks it up, my family is JUST not like that. Our dogs have always been apart of the family regardless of what situation we're in.

The westies I've owned and that my parents have owned in the past have all been from reputable breeders and none have had any of your normal issues that badly bred westies have like that skin condition and that puppy lions jaw thing. So we know what to look for at least when it comes to looking for a healthy dog.

My parents are funding me because this is something I know love. We're not rich by any means they're just wanting to help me find my calling and if this is it then thats what it will be. Regardless of what happens as I said these dogs and our current westie will be with us forever regardless of any issues that may arise in the future.

To all the haters and negative comments, you should be ashamed of yourselves. First of all I am a guy not a girl so you can stop with your bitchy, snobby and nasty comments. I am going to assume most of you are probably old enough to be my mum and you talk like this to people young enough to be your kids? You should be ashamed of yourselves. Just because your own life is so boring and crap doesn't mean you should automatically go around internet forums spreading your own personal negativity on everyone else you see that just might be trying to achieve something for themselves.

I've had nothing but positive feed-back from people I've spoken to about this in person. I've seen kids on video games forum that are more mature than a lot of the so called mature women posting here. Sorry I even came to these forums I didn't think women in their 30's and 40's could be such nasty bitches on the internet. Telling me that you hope my litters are all sick puppies....what the hell is that?, seriously you disgust me.

    1) Why do you assume the members here are all women?
    2) You are NOT my child. No child of mine would ask the questions you have and not consider the answers at great length.
    3) You are 22, that is legally an adult. Please don't enter a public forum and expect members to treat you as if you were a child, as you are not.
    4) You have no idea about the private lives of members on here, so please refrain from stating that our lives are boring and crap. You seriously would have NFI about any of the members who have answered your thread.
    5) Please don't refer to members here as "nasty bitches" EVER AGAIN.

I am involved in a games forum, and if they are all supportive then i would guess they dont know themselves the pro's and con's of breeding. And trust me,they aint more mature than people on here, ive seen alot of immaturity in the games forum i am in,also in the chat program we use. Its usually the 17-25yo's who show the immaturity and call those a lot more experienced 'nasty bitches',i guess you would fit into that category there.

I gave you my opinion, many of the people here gave your their opinions. Was not the purpose of you creating your thread to get the opinions of those more experienced in matters such as this? Obviously when you ask an opinion you will get both good and bad opinions from people. A mature person would then read what has been said, weigh up the pro's and con's,perhaps re-question or make another statement such as that which you did in the first part of that which i quoted above. That second part wasnt a very mature post at all.

I think you misread, Red. He got support from people he's spoken to in person (not on the gaming forum).

It's all good and well to give opinions, but to attack as aggressively as some people have done in this thread is over the top. People really need to sit back and read what they write before they post. Regardless of whether the topic is to your taste or not, EVERYONE deserves the same respect as you yourself expect.

I have bolded the parts I would like to address...

How do you know you like dog breeding? It's certainly not an easy thing to do. Just because you love a certain breed, doesn't mean you should be making puppies.
I think you need to sit back and have a really good look at WHY you want to do this.

Write yourself a list of all the pros and cons of breeding (be HONEST)

    Do you show your dogs?
Having a good Westie, and THINKING you have a good Westie are 2 entirely different things.
I encourage anyone who wants to breed their dog to start showing it. It's not about the ribbons, or medals, it's about the JUDGING. It's not just you seeing the good qualities in your dog and being blind to the faults, it EVERYONE judging your dog... a wider audience can make you realize quite a few things.

Next bold part... WHO have you talked to? I doubt it would be reputable breeders, and if they are, there wouldn't be many.
Sorry, but reputable breeders wouldn't encourage breeding for money, which is what you started out saying in the start of this thread.

    3) I'm not in either of those age brackets, nor do I consider myself a bitch... just realistic.

It's a bit hard to take you seriously when you ask for opinions and consistently reject them without doing any of the research that would help you achieve what you want or even find out if it's what you want.

How are you with blood and gore and death - because pregnancy in dogs (and humans) can involve all this. Do the people you have spoken to about this, face to face, know anything about dog breeding? Have you spoken to any of the people who have to deal with the dark side of puppy farms and the reject puppies? Are you prepared to take back any puppies that are unwanted by your buyers and find new homes for them? You could be looking after a lot more than three dogs. Do you know anything about genetics and recessive genes and how to make sure you avoid inbreeding and the health issues that come with that? Do you know what is involved in the basic health testing of your prospective westie parents? Did you know that hip tests involve dogs going under General Anaesthetic - which is moderately traumatic for everybody including the dog, and carries a slight risk of death for the dog?

All I can see is you know how to abuse people on a forum. How are you going to deal with rude prospective puppy buyers? Just because someone abuses you first doesn't make it appropriate or even ok for you to abuse them back. That's called lowering your standards to meet theirs. But you don't seem to have any standards or you wouldn't be posting like you know everything already just because we haven't written what you want to read.

Did it ever occur to you that there might be good reasons why most of us urge you to do more research. Starting with the costing. I think you're deluded if you think your parents are going to be a "little bit" out of pocket. Do some proper costing.

How much do you think you can sell a westie puppy for? How many puppies do you think you could get from three dogs, in a year? Note, it's not a good idea to get a bitch pregnant every season or even every second season, it damages her health and the puppies health and is generally bad for dog well being. Ie torture. What will the pre and post natal vet bills be? How much does the genetic testing cost? How much does it cost to register as a breeder so your puppies can be registered as pedigree?

There is a saying in life that is something "looks like a duck, acts like a duck and quacks like a duck, then it must be a duck".

Change "duck" to "child" and you have your own autobiography.

You asked for people's opinions, and you got them, in spades. If all you wanted was agreement and encourgement that abusing dogs by breeding for profit is a good thing, then you should have kept your typing fingers in your pockets.

Calling people names is the most childish of all responses when you don't like what you are being told.

    Duck, anyone?
