Thread: Help?

    Default Help?

    Ah, I'm new to the pregnancy and birthing of dogs, and I could really use some advice. XD My dog, Momo, is thought to be about a month along in her pregnancy, her puppies due at the beginning of July.

    This was an accidental pregnancy, and she's only about 11 months old. Is there anything I should watch out for with her?

    I've only ever helped a cat give birth, and never seen a dog give birth, and I'm the only human in my household, so I know I'll be the one to have to help her if something goes wrong. ^^;

    Any tips?

    The father is my baby, Kavik, and he did it right before I went to get him castrated, the cheeky boy. XD;

    You can see pictures of both Kavik and Momo in my album "My Doggies <3", if you'd like to. =D

    Thanks for reading!

    Given her age and your inexperience I woudl suggest going to your vet and having them run you through everything you should do and what you should look out for. And have them on standby when the time comes, you may need their help.

    Yeah, I have her an appointment for a check-up and for an x-ray on the 24th of June, because I know I won't be that helpful when the time comes for her puppies. ^^

    I just need some advice on care for her beforehand. ^_^ Like, the right kind of food and stuff that she needs, and should I be keeping her inside most of the time or is she alright still being outside?

    I wouldnt be changing anything... Animals have babies in the wild all the time with no human contact what so ever.

    Thats just my logic speaking though.. i could be very wrong.

    That's what I had always thought, but as I read up on dog pregnancy and knowing how young she is, I was worried I should change some things for her. ^^

    X-ray? Or do you mean ultrasound?

    Given her age I would look at getting her on calcium supliments and keep her at a healthy weight, she will need to be a healthy as possible for the birthing. Get her used to living where she is going to whelp, you can leave that until a bit later though.

    No, I mean x-ray. XD The vet she's with doesn't offer ultrasounds. Just x-rays, and pressing around to find the babies. ^^ I asked if they would just feel around and see, but they suggested an x-ray too, so I went with it.

    And thanks for the tips. =D

    Arnt xrays for bones only? ultrasounds are for all the gooey things

    Maybe looking for puppy bones, seems strange tho.

    Xrays are expensive here in australia.. i think so anyway. Cost me $187 + sedative costs for Lex
    make sure they arnt ripping you off

    Thats... different.
    I would not xray my preg girls for the same reason I would not alow and xray of myself without protection if I was preggers. I wouldnt think it would be good for growing fetus'. But I am not a vet so maybe she knows something i do not.
    good luck with her if you have any other questions just ask.
