Thread: What is Your Dream Family?

Poodles, Chinese Cresteds and Great Danes.

3 breeds I have lived with and 3 breeds that I love to bits. I would dearly love a Great Dane one day. When I was little I had a queen size bed and had 2 of them sleeping with me. Unlike Whippets, Danes can curl up into tiny little balls, it's crazy!
At one point we had 4 of them in the house. Even with their ball-curling ability they still pushed me off the couch so I got used to watching TV on the floor

    I miss them

My dream family would have to include Casey, and every other colour variation of a Border Collie, and a newfie in every colour variation.

And since this is a dream family, I would love to have Keira and Jackson back with me
Only a twinkle in his daddys eye ♥♡
(IM)patiently waiting for my long awaited newfie pup ♥♡

Sorry for the late reply guys He says he's tried various antihistamines and other medication when he was little, but the next time I see his mom I'd like to ask her for more specifics. Recently I got him to try a nose-spray medication (the name is on the tip of my tongue but I just can't remember, I'll check the box when I get home) that his sister recommended (she's allergic to dogs, too, but doesn't get asthma as badly as him I think) - it had very little benefit for his asthma and had some nasty side effects like blocking his ears and nose. I'd like to get him to try Claritin as I know it helped me when I developed really nasty allergies to something when we first moved to the U.S. from Ukraine - I was swollen all over, my joints hurt so I couldn't move properly, and I think my throat was swollen. Maybe it'll help...

Antihistamines have come a long way in the last 10 years, now there are the non-drowsy ones (Claratyne and Telfast) and Zyrtec which makes 10-20% of people drowsy, all of these are once-a-day tablet so don't impact too much on your life. Can save big $$ by getting the generic brands, they work just as well.

Nasal sprays are tricky - the decongestant ones will work brilliantly for a few days then you get a 'rebound effect' where congestion gets worse. Steroid sprays (Rhinocort, Beconase, Nasonex) work great but it'll take a while to see any effect. Can also try eye drops (Livostin or Zaditen) depending on his symptoms.

    Hope that helps!

Beconase! That was the one we tried. Because he's been on medicine for years when he was younger and had bad side effects, constantly drowsy, congestion, etc. (his family had dogs and cats throughout his life), he's very specific about not wanting to go through that again. So convincing him to try Beconase until the side effects start going away (he tried for about a week) is going to be tough. I'll look into Claratyne and Telfast and others as well. There must be something out there.

One thing that annoys me a bit is that he's so sure that nothing is going to work. He says that because nothing he's tried worked before, it's a pretty much useless effort. I'm a big believer in mind over matter and this bugs me to no end. In my mind the more negative he is about the effectiveness of whatever we try the less effective it's going to be.

You're absolutely right, also makes him less likely to use it as directed which gives him an excuse to say it's not working!

Tell him new antihistamines are not the same as old antihistamines (trust me, I'm a pharmacist ) - he would have probably been taking polaramine or phenergan back in the day which turns most people into zombies! Claratyne and Telfast are safer than drugs you can buy in supermarkets IMO.

Thanks, Meegs, I'll definitely tell him this and get him to try either Claratyne or Telfast next as well.

Oh, I want a German Shepherd and an English Staffy to join my little Mutts! But dear me - my two are enough!

I would have a Rottweiler, long coat German Shephard, Pyranean Mountain Dog, Newfoundland and a Maremma and any other stragglers that end up with me. I'd have a big swimming pool (just for the dogs) and a few acres of land for them to run around on. I guess I'd need a really huge bedroom too so they can all sleep in there, and probably join a few king size beds together so there's no favouritism
