Default Dog-lovers Pay $6K for Aussie Kelpies

THAT most Australian of dogs, the kelpie, has become so popular some are fetching up to $6000 each and breeders cannot keep up with demand.

The Courier-Mail reports Matt Whitley, of Mangoplah near Wagga Wagga in southern NSW, sold a dog last week for $6100 - thought to be a record.

At Belrieve Working Kelpies, in the Plainland area between Brisbane and Toowoomba, breeders Philip Edwards and Sophia Butler cannot meet demand.

"It's just ridiculous," Ms Butler said.

"We've been increasing the price but it's not a problem for people who are after good quality working dogs."

Kelpie breeders say while the sheep boom has helped, the dogs' popularity has ballooned in the past decade, especially overseas.

"We've just sold two to Spain and France," Ms Butler said.

Working Kelpie Council spokeswoman Barbara Cooper said prices had doubled but the demand was for good working dogs, not poorer quality animals.

In 2006, a dog was sold to the US for $8000, although overseas sales usually brought more money than domestic ones.

Mrs Cooper said buyers looked for intelligent multi-purpose dogs, to work with various animals, and ones with a good temperament, confirmation and strength.

Kelpies are herding reindeer, goats and even turkeys.

"Heavens, they are popular," Mrs Cooper said.

"We thought with the drought demand would fall off but it didn't. If anything it got stronger."

Yea, but the ones advertised in newspapers are form BYBs and have bad breeding. You gotta compare it though.... a $6000 one with excellent breeding or a $250 one with bad breeding eg health problems
Hmm. This is constructive, coming from me... lol

It has been known for ages that a good working Kelpie does the work of several men on a property, for little in return.

I'm glad this hard working Aussie is finally getting the respect it deserves.

To see one in full flight working mode is a sight to behold.

We should also remember that these dogs are not always seen as pets but an investment, an employee and a damn hard working one at that

    pet shops? *sigh*

Besides, I hardly think a kelpie from a pet shop is going to be a good working dog... farmers don't just pop down to the local shop looking for a working dog

Now that I've read peoples responses (mainly MAC's) I now realise how wrong I was.

    No I wouldn't.

I feel like I've been attacked by you guys... I am entitled to an opinion and I don't attack you's when you have an opinion that I am against, I prefer not to get involved at all. I am going to delete the post so that I don't get any further lectures etc.

Please don't do that again, not nice..
