Default Dog Licking Ears, Dog is Boss, Licking and Doggy Friends, Bosses and Subordinates

    Hi all

Thought I'd start a new thread for this.

Cleasanta posted about Sumo and Ruby - Ruby licks Sumo in the ears so Ruby is Sumo's boss.

    http://www.dogforum.com.au/general-d...html#post86636

Now...here is something I didn't know...he asked us...does any of your dogs lick the other dog in the ear? We said...yes, Ruby does that to Sumo all the time. He then said...then Ruby is the boss...no doubt. Sumo is excreting pheromones from his ears telling her that he is subordinate to her.....very interesting...you learn something new every day
I've watched Frosty who is very keen on licking her friends. Especially when she meets them somewhere other than the usual dog park like if we meet by accident at the beach.

She licks whatever bit of dog she can reach but mostly around the mouth of the other dog, which I interpret as meaning "really really pleased to see you, I am your humble grovelly friend".

I hadn't noticed specifically if any of her friends return the greeting by licking Frosty's ears, but I will pay more attention in future.

I was wondering what other people have noticed about who licks who and whether they're peers or boss-subordinate relationships.

All the Whippets hail Queen Gemma who up until November last year was entire she is 4yo.

All do the usual licking and groveling around the mouth, body squirming and body language appeasing etc. When she has a drink they will lick the water from her mouth and chin (this is a dog that almost needs a snorkle when she drinks).

My 16 mth old male Whippet is the one that does it the most, particularly when Gemma gets worked up around meal times and is giving me the woo woo hurry up.

The Whippets do not do it to each other. They have no respect for each others bed space but then whippets like to layer upon each other and us for body warmth. They always respect HER sleeping space and approach with caution.

I have been waiting to see if there is any change in dynamics due to the mating and subsequent litter but since the dam is the next in line in age and place in the house and so is the sire there may be no change.

Have not witnessed any ear licking

Ooh, I found it really interesting reading about the whole ear clean thing! I have a couple of lickers here, Cindy and Matrix. Cindy is by far the biggest licker! She licks faces, clean eyes, flosses teeth (yes gets her tongue right in the mouth) and cleans ears!

Here's an example (victim is Samson, one of my boarders, a ridgey x) - yes he IS a submissive boy despite his size.

I noticed when I had both my cats that the younger cat always licked the older cats ears, so maybe there is a similar thing. The older cat (Satan) was definitely the dominate cat!

I have watched my brother's Great Dane lick his ears. Does that mean that the Dane is the boss and my brother is submissive??? Or just that my brother needs a wash!!!!!

I found this very interesting too. Hamish is always trying to lick cousin Molly's ears. She never seems very happy about it though so I am not sure if it would be the same thing

My cat licks Dora ALL over (yes, I mean down there, too!)
He licks her ears too, though. Is it the same with cats and dogs, or just dogs and dogs?

Teddy almost gives us as well as Max and Pipi a bath! He just won't stop, you get him to finally leave you and he comes straight back for more! But seriously you would feel like you have just had a shower or washed your hands lol.

    beautifully illustrated!

Suki the step-pup is forever trying to lick Pedro's mouth, she's totally submissive to both my dogs even though she's now bigger than both of them and can get either one pinned down in a play fight. Haven't seen any ear-licking though - Pedro and Marnie are more people-lickers when they get the chance. All moving in together Brady Bunch-style next year so will be interesting to see if the dynamic changes!
