Default *Sigh* Another Pit Bull Attack..

A woman savagely mauled by her dog was saved by quick-thinking neighbours who fought off the animal with a rubbish bin.

The 57-year-old was attacked by the male pit bull cross in her home at Portland in Victoria's far southwest about 11am (AEDT) this morning.

She suffered a partially severed right arm, an injured left arm as well as bites to her face.

Police believe a family member alerted neighbours to the dog attack.

They broke a glass panel on the front door to gain access to the scene before reportedly throwing a rubbish bin at the animal.

The dog was then chased into a back room where it was contained before being destroyed by police officers after advice from the city's council.

The victim was flown 400km to The Alfred Hospital in Melbourne to undergo emergency surgery.

She is listed as being in a serious condition and received pain treatment while in the air but was not sedated.

Apparently the dog belonged to her son & it's behaviour changed when he left the dog in his Mother's care.

UPDATE 4.25pm: A VICIOUS dog which almost ripped a woman's arm off in a savage attack this morning has been destroyed.

A 67-year-old woman suffered major muscle and skin damage to her right arm during the two minute attack in her Piles Court flat in Portland, in the state's southwest.

A Pit Bull Staffordshire Cross which she had been minding was destroyed at the scene by police following a request from a council officer.

Police today hailed the actions of the woman's brave neighbour who fought off the dog as it nearly ripped the woman's arm off in this morning's attack.

Police said the man smashed his way through a glass panel on the front door of the woman's home after seeing the attack.

“The neighbour threw a rubbish bin at the dog, which then ran into a back room where it was contained,” a police spokeswoman said.

The woman was initially taken to Portland Hospital before being airlifted to the Alfred Hospital where she arrived shortly after 2pm.

Surgeons are now trying to reattach the nerves in the woman's right arm and restore circulation to the arm.

If the surgery is not successful it is feared the woman could lose her arm.

The woman also suffered severe injuries to her left arm in the attack, which paramedics said appeared to be defensive wounds.

MICA flight paramedic Justin Nunan said the woman lost a lot of blood.

“She sustained really quite severe injuries to her arm and face,” he said.

He said the woman was given a substantial amount of pain relief, and IV fluids to stabilise her blood pressure.

“She was fully aware and conscious and very distressed,” he said.

“We have no understanding of why the dog attacked, it was completely unprovoked.”

The woman is believed to be in a serious condition.

Portland police are investigating the brutal attack after being called to the scene at around 11.30am.
