Myf, the RSPCA here is great IMO. But I know soooooooo many ppl in Qld who loath the RSPCA there. Generally, they have each had episodes with them that have caused them to form their negative opinion, which is fair enough and their right.

I truly think it can come down to different branches and who are the ppl behind each branch. Just like anything else in life I guess.

AGB i whole heartedly agree. i support the agrguments BSL put forward and their cause but i dont support the way the advertise themselves or approach the issue...if more maturity was used and the name and the way they attack the issue changed i would most likely throw my support behind it rather than than just agreeing from the sidlines

Good decent Pitbull owners, it almost sounds funny to say. Sorry you are the minority.
What is it about the breed that attracts the majority of irresponsible owners???
    maybe its the dogs reputation??

That is why i dont see any solution to the problem.
A pitbull is beyond doubt one of the strongest ferocious dogs around. It has a reputation of this and has been more than capable of living up to it. Unfortunately not all are like this however they will be tarred with the same brush regardless.
I dont think you will ever convince me that you will be able to take the pit out of the bull.

I quite agree with this, Peter. How many ppl own a pitbull for the love of the dog, and how many want them just because it makes one look tough. "Look at me, I own a pitbull." Innocent ppl are getting attacked by dogs that have most likely been brought up with little or no training. The dog is allowed to be the boss then the is re-homed, possibly under false pretences & disaster strikes.

When I had my pet shop, I was very often asked if we sold pitbulls and the only enquirers were quite rough, tough looking ppl looking for something to make them stand out. I had some staffy puppies & one buyer brought one back and argued with me that I mislead them into buying a pitbull. I did no such thing, I clearly advertised them, and microchip papers were clear that the animals were staffy x unknown. I took back the puppy in fear of its safety because these ppl were convinced it was pitbull and reckon they were going to report me. Nobody knew what they were crossed with. If the breeders did they refused to say - all they offered is that their staffy bitch escaped the yard while on heat. It was by chance that an American couple came into my store and commented on them. I shared my grief I'd experienced with the pups, to these ppl. The guy told me they bred and showed APBs in America for many years and could tell my puppies were indeed staffys. He could not see any pitbull in them at all. I still see one of the pups who is now 4 years old and the most gorgeous, friendly, licky dog I've ever met. Absolute pearler of a pet.

Sadly PBs don't have a great reputation, and its the backyard tough-doers that keep on creating the crosses of them and on-selling puppies with their tough stance. Type of ppl that no-one like you or I would buy a pup from, hence those ppl are keeping the reputation of the dogs alive and on-going. Not saying the dogs are all innocent, bit like the reputation P-licensed drivers are earning due to the amount of accidents are caused by hoons, make it hard for everyone.

I just have to say, its terrifying to think that BSL could move onto other breeds. What if they targeted Rottweilers? My darling, sweet Taya would be labelled as vicious... and she is the most beautiful natured dog! The thought of her being PTS just because she is part Rotti is beyond belief.

So I can understand how lovers of the bull breeds feel when their dogs are targeted.

Absolutely, Loren. Again, sensible dog owners don't dress their pets in studded leather, tough gear to advertise that the dog is potentially tough and dangerous. I would feel the same as you, if Asher was ever targetted. And he already has by a couple of know-it-alls who claim he is pitbull just because he is brindle and growls back at strangers when they growl at him. Apparently PBs are the only breed that does that [please note sarcasm in my words, you ppl have been more than supportive of Asher & I in that area]

Rottwielers, German Shepherds, Dobermans. Trust me, they'll be next.
