as for working dogs ive seen many kick injures and trample injuries but NEVER a tail injury
FYI I was referring to those done in the case of an injury not in the case of cosmetics. I still find your comment offensive and judgemental. I hope you don't judge the dogs you see that are bobtailed/docked possibly in the street without talking to their owners.

My husband's grandmother's staffy had to have her tail amputated after something fell on it and severed it. Is that cruel and barbaric?

That's not a dew claw. Dew claws are on hind legs and usualy cause lots of problems because they're useles and often dangling, get stuck, get injured. I had a dog with dew claws and had them removed for that reason. A very simple surgery done only with local anaesthetic. However, some breed standards require that dogs have dew claws, Beaucerone (french heardind dog) for instance has double dew claws on each hind leg!

    Beauceron (pronanunced Boseron):

and it's dew claws required by breed standard: (looks bloody ugly if you ask me, although the breed is gorgeous)

Respect and you shall be respected. Animal is always right.

    Just a little fun fact.
In China if a Shih Tzu is born with all 4 dew claws it is considered lucky
My little Elliott (RIP) had all 4
My Cresty has front dewys but he was born without back ones. I would have removed them given the choice (and I will do if/when I eventually breed)

As for Cropping and Docking, I'm glad they are banned. Will be good when WA follows suit and bans docking as well.
It's unnecessary. My mum used to breed Miniature Poodles and they are a docked breed, she was happy the day it was banned. She couldn't even stay in the vets room while it was being done, she felt awful.... but, they were show dogs and they had to be docked.

Some of the things show people do honestly make me rather sick. I have heard of tendons being cut to straighten tails, fake testicles being inserted because the dog was a monorchid, then that dog being bred from.

I used to love the dog show world but these days it's just getting beyond a joke.

As a side note I don't know much about working dogs but stepping on their tails seems a LOT less likely than them being kicked or having a leg broken.

Tony (my Tibby) has back due claws. I was abit bummed when I finnally noticed, I think its genetic defult on his mothers line but eh. Fron dews on tibbies are usually not a problem with all that hair to protect them, but back ones are just a little more likely to get caucht on things, esp if he starts to climb. The vet can take them off, so, if I get too worried about it, that is the way I will go. But like I said before, most of them dont need doing.

Crested, I have been showing for years in the toy ring and then with the whippets. I did not know about poodles being docked breed until I got one. I just naturally thought they had straight tails but they dont! When I was looking into them before I got sophie I found out that they dock the last few vertibre so they dont have the curl at they end! How vain!! That is one breed I am glad are not docked. I just wish the people making the rules would think about OESs and breeds like that

Breeding, Showing, Training and general crazy making!!!

Spot on! My sentiments exactly, Crested. Some of the things you see and know make one very...cynical.

ARE YOU FOR REAL?? OMG those people give the rest of us a bad name
I cant believe that! I have been thinking abpout tattooing my tibbies eyelid because Im worried about the big C, I kept him cause I thought it was cute but since Kia, Im worried. There is no way I would put any one of my dogs through that kind of thing for cosmetic reasons!!! The inside of their mouths!!
