I don't think tail docking is barbaric if it's done properly. I could compare it to circumcision in male humans I guess. Pups are docked within first few days after they're born, and it really does not hurt and heals quickly. However, I do not think it is necessary, especially if dog is not a working dog that may get injured (I honestly doubt that percentage of injuring a tail is all that high with working dogs ).

Ear cropping is awful in my opinion. It's a lengthy process and pup is usually 3 to 4 months old when its done, has to wear this thing on its head to keep ears in a position, therefore can't play with other dogs so it doesn't hurt his ears. It' also more prone to infections, and the results are not always great. Absolutely unnecessary. However, I really really like dobermans when they're cropped/docked, but if I had a doberman pup and have a choice of docking/cropping I wouldn't do it just for sake of dog's looks.
Respect and you shall be respected. Animal is always right.

What is the point of ear cropping?

I've always thought it was done purely for dogs which were bread to fight back years & years ago when dog fighting was legal.(Unsure if it was ever legal in Australia) or just U.S &/or UK.

As for tail docking i dont see the point of doing it for no reason unless it needs to be removed due to medical complications.

Yep your correct in regards to ear cropping for dog fighting purposes & it's still happening in today..

& idiots still crop pitbulls & other bull breeds ears in today's society for nothing other than a "tough dog" image.

"Hey look at my "kick ar*e" Pitty he's got cropped ears, along with a big mad ar*e spike studded collar & thick steel chain leash.... i'm a tough f**kwit"

I'm not overly passionate one way or the other. If I owned a breed that's usually docked or cropped, it's very unlikely that I would choose to do it. I need to really research and think on the issue more before going on the "for" or "against" side though.

I dont think this thread is a stir... she's just asking an earnest question. Is it illegal in just Oz? Or other countries?
