Anytime from 6 months or so. Some can be slightly earlier than that.

My breed - generally not before 18 months old. Which is pretty standard for bigger breeds - older is not unlikely in even larger ones.

For Tenties though? Six months. They mature early.

Speaking of that Natty, Inca's breeder had a bitch that didn't come in until she was almost 18 months. She was getting seriously worried, as all her bitches had always come into their first before the 12 month mark.

I had Pretty booked in and she came into season. We are coping ok. I take my vet's advice of the dangers of desexing while in season (can be excessive bleeding problems) so I am not going to vet shop for one who will, in my mind, do a dangerous procedure and I will do my best to keep her away from any males. So far so good.

I feel if many vets feel against doing it at this time these days then their reasons and safety fears are valid.
