Default Dogs Sticking Their Heads Out Car Windows...

I don't allow it to happen. Noses are allowed to sniff as long as it stays inside the car. I'm worried about something hitting the eye and causing blindness or falling out the window, or jumping out when the car has stopped, all options are way to scary!

I expect them to stay in their seat and not bounce around and to be relatively quiet. But I don't really like barking at all.

What do you let your dogs do in the car? What do you expect of them?

ummm....to be honest. To be dogs ?

I'm not trying to be a sarcastic stirrer , I just honestly think we as a society expect an awful lot of our dogs in this day and age. What you expect of your dogs Batty is what I expect of my kids

My dogs love having the nose out the window !

edit to add that as Di_Dee though,if its hot enough for air con then its in their direction

    i agree.
nooo heads out the window, isnt there rules about waving hands about out windows as they can be swiped off? so same with animals, too dangerous, they could jump out even.

as we're rural, on the occasion up to the tip, or boss' farm i have let them, but thats what utes are for!

Nope Floyd is not allowed to stick he's head out of the windows, Floyd is harnessed into middle of back seat & cant reach the window anyway. Aircon is on & facing in Floyd's direction if its hot weather or other wise we have the windows down.

Big bum luvs being in the car & going for drives, he just sits quietly & patiently having a sticky beak at the big wide world or doing he's fav thing lying down & having a sleep in the car.

I don't want a dog that will bounce from side to side, bark at anything that moves, hang out the window or generally cause a nuisance or distraction while I'm driving. I know I'm overly cautious, but I have calm quiet dogs in the car and that means more to me than appeasing society's view on how dogs should expect. There are dogs that I refuse to have in my car because I know how they behave.

To be honest I find that my dog/s are far happier when they have very clear black and white rules on what is and isn't acceptable and because of the way I expect my dogs to behave particularly in public or in the car.

Yes society expects a lot from dogs now days but how many people do you know whose dogs could even come close to living up to those expectations?

ETA: Aircon is used very frequently with us too, and the centre vents are pointed at Batty if it's hot weather.

Windows are always up with the air con vents directed towards the furkids. Plus they are harnessed in so can't reach the windows anyway.

Batty I didnt say I wanted a dog that carried on in that way either and to be honest I dont think many of us would nor would allow the behaviour to continue for very long.

I see nothing wrong with my dogs sitting quietly at their respective windows with nose going and ears blowing in the wind. They are not 'carrying' on,they are doing something they obviously love doing.

edit to add that setting clear boundaries and allowing a dog to be a dog is not unacheivable? (sp?-sorry not great night)

My dogs are not allowed to do this...they are in their crate in the back of the car where they get the cool air from the air con.

When I had a car *tear* It didn't have power windows so Kimbas side was rarely down. I was a massive fan of Aircon..lol

Even when it was down she only stuck her head out a bit and only on rare occasions. On trips further than the last "walkies" Beach turnoff She was out like a light..lol
