The only problem with Great Danes is they're not always much when it comes to guarding. I heard one story where the owner was burgled and she found the Dane, unharmed and hiding under the bed.

I had friends with Great Danes and they've usually been very timid and run away at any scary noise or sight.

I met a gorgeous black one in our Parklands the other day. The owner was walking it in a prong collar because she couldn't get the sensible harness to work on it, and it was very strong without some additional leverage. Neck had no marks from the collar so I guess she was using it correctly and dog seemed quite happy though it was scared of Frosty initially. Apparently some SWF had attacked it and now it was scared of all dogs. Go figure. Frosty did her usual "I'm no threat roll over thing" and we waited for the GD to decide if it wanted to check Frosty out, which it did and they both went into instant "lets play" with bows and leaps which was difficult for the GD owner to handle.

But eventually Frosty and the GD were walking calmly side by side while I tried to persuade owner to visit some local tennis courts - fenced securely but room for doggies to run and bonus claw trimming. But that didn't happen. The GD owner was relieved to see that the right dog could calm hers down and give it confidence back.

So if you want a dog that's going to protect you - I suspect a GD is an unlikely candidate. Consider the ridgeback instead?

Good point, But it all depends on the right socialistaion and upbringing. I only want a deterrant (their size and bark).
