    Default Becoming a Dog Shower!?

    Hi all,

I took Bailey to the local doggie swimming pool, The Pet Park today. Its is based at Edinborough RAAF Base and I have been hanging out for an available appointment to take her down there. It is run by Vonrauten Kennels whom are breeders of German Shepherds and Schripperkes.

    Well.............

Bailey enjoyed the swimming a lot although her knee starting becoming sore rather quickly....so we kept it short and sweet and used a doggie life jacket to reduce the pressure on her back legs.

Had a little bit of an issue because the owners partner was helping with Bailey in the pool and he insisted on control her lead. I explained to him that she is very "skittish" around males and she wont cope well with him having full control and especially because she was in a new environment etc. He insisted on controlling her anyway and told me to stand at the opposite end of the pool to coax her down.

Bailey coped ok although it took a lot of praise and reassurance that "he" was ok and wouldn't hurt her.

During all the excitement, unbeknownst to me, the breeder stood in the background and watched the situation and the way I dealt with it. I approached her after the session and was discussing membership costs, obedience training etc when she asked me if I WANTED A JOB!!!!!!

I was completely gob smacked to say the least!!!

She explained that she had been watching how well I handled Bailey and her training/behavioural issues and was very impressed!

She told me she is currently on the look out for a female my age who has a complete love of animals (especially dogs) whom would be interested in training to showing her German Shepherds for her. It would obviously be mostly weekend work however may slightly interfere with my Mon-Fri 9am-5pm job when the Nationals roll around. As I would need to fly out on a thursday night and fly back in on a monday morning. She told me she would of course pay for all the costs involved with joining SACCA, flights in and out, travel costs and clothing for the shows. She would also pay me to show for her. Mostly I would be showing pups and her Champion dogs that are fully trained. She would also give me free swimming, training, leads and collars for Bailey.

She told me to think on it and visit the All Dog Breeds Show tonight which her daughter was showing some of her Shepherds in. Have a look around and get the feel of the atmosphere etc. She will call me next week to discuss it

I am just soooooo excited at the moment!!! I cant think straight!!!
I am very proud of myself that someone with experience was happy with the way I deal with Bailey and that I am doing the right thing with her!

I am of course............VERY PROUD OF BAILEY for doing so well and I will get some pics up soon as mum sends them through to me

The reason for the post is mostly to get some advice from showers and see if it is really for me.
Anyone with any info and/or advice please post here.

    Cheers in advance guys

Sorry no advice here either but wanted to say Well done. I'm so glad you have something positive happening in your life, after the recent heartache.

    Excellent news.

Thanks guys for all the congrats

I too feel it not really about the job itself but more about the little boost it has given me in a time of such heartache.

I am seriously considering it but will make sure it is whats right for me.....and my family.

At the end of the day I need to look at how much I am already away from home and how much "pet" time I already get with my pups.
Perhaps they will be ok perhaps not I will be waying up the pros and cons for a while to see what works for us all

Congrats. A word of warning - the GSD ring is the bitchiest ring out there - many people don't last because of it.

Saying that - SA tends to have the friendliest mob and some of the nicest dogs

    good luck
