    Default The Merle Gene

Why is it so frowned upon? I hear that in the UK in a lot of breeds a Merle pup cannot be registered.

I think the Merle border collies are really pretty.

The breed standard for ACD outlawed Merle too, but I thoght that was one of the distinctive characteristics.

It could have been something political - ie the breeders in charge of the club trying to exclude "low life scum" who had dogs with merle... A bit like ridgebacks must have ridges, and dalmations must have separate not blurry spots .

People can be far too pompous with breed standards. Not every single change that goes through a breed over time is bad.

I dont get it either. I think merle great danes are gorgeous and from what I've read you always get them when breeding for Harlquinns. Don't understand then why you can show one and not the other

I thought merle genes were related to deafness or blindness or something?? I am almost positive it is linked to a major genetic fault and that is why it is discouraged in some breeds. I could be wrong though???

I have no idea but that would explain why it was ruled out, as I think Merle looks absolutely breathtaking.

Merle to merle and there is a high chance of deafness & or blindness, pink noses etc. Recently worked with a merle to merle coolie. She was both partially blind and deaf. Eyes were VERY pale blue almost clear.

She was very hard to train and did not interact much with very loving owners. They thought she was dependent on her BC friend, but with testing it turned out she was not particular which dog she bonded with.

Even food did not interest this dog.

Since she takes her cues from other dogs we are going to commence with training the BC X first.
