    Default Ear Cropping?

This is a concept I've just come across (I've been researching animal abuse and what I can do to help)

What exactly is this? Is it legal in Australia? If anyone has any websites/articles on ear cropping I'd be very interested to read.

And just out of curiosity, those who show and know a lot about breed standards, what is your thoughts on ear cropping?

Ear cropping was apparently originally designed for breeds that were prone to ear infections or ears that become water logged, increase speed, and the obvious preventing injuries in a fight. Nowadays, its all done for cosmetic reasons. A lot of breeds in the USA are only recognised with cropped ears. The Boxer, Great Dane, Pit Bull and Doberman are the obvious ones.
Ear cropping is illegal in Australia.
Ear cropping and tail docking go hand in hand.

I see lots of dogs with little stubby tails, I thought that was natural?

Can you explain all this to me Myf? Lol sorry for being ignorant, but I really want to be informed when I do my speech at school etc.

Researching the internet for breed information i found that a majority of overseas Neo's have cropped ears, they always look mutilated IMO.

I attempted to research but I'm not that internet savvy so I got lost.

I suppose one of the big questions is: Why do they do it? Is it like purposely breeding dangerously tiny toy breeds to cater to a selfish demand? Or is it 'a tradition, we can't give it up y'all' sort of thing?

Your not in WA are you?
Tail docking/ear cropping are both legal over there.
Perhaps they have been imported from somewhere its legal.
The two methods are banding like with sheep. A tight rubber band that cuts of blood supply then the tail drops off.
Or literally cutting it off with scissors.

Some people like their dog to have the 'traditional' look.
Hold on, I'll find you a website

By now I naively thought nothing more in the puppy world could shock me but...Wow.

Thank you so much for helping me out Myf! I'm in Victoria.

Can you please PM what courses you took to become a vet nurse? It's one of the things I'm considering.
