Default Animals Regulation of Sale Bill or Pet Shop Bill

I'm not a regular on the forum and I don't want to cause any problems but I would like to bring to the attention of the members here recent written comments made by the President of Dogs NSW regarding the Animals Regulation of sale Bill or more commonly 'pet shop bill'.

Why Dogs NSW opposed this Bill:
Although the Bill was promoted as banning sale of pets in pet shops, the devil was in the internal detail. That detail set up a very wide regulatory process that would have made it much easier for animal rights activists to speed up their main goals. Those aims include closing down purebred dog showing and breeding permanently.
This campaign is not over and the Bill will continue to be promoted by the animal rights activists throughout Australia as part of their overall program.
This is an Australia-wide program; the ANKC, Dogs NSW and other ANKC member bodies must be determined and proactive in their opposition to it.

As a registered breeder I am opposed to the sale of dogs in the window of pet shops, but I also want to become more informed in case I "cut off my nose to spite my face" so to speak.

I've put this out there so that people can do their own careful research and be well informed before they back this bill. If they still decide to after they have looked into it that's fine.

If they shut down breeding completely - where are we supposed to get a pet dog from? Puppy mills?

I know, it's really difficult to work out who and what to trust regarding this bill.

I'm trying to find out as much info as possible before I make any decisions myself. But I saw a post on the site today regarding what I think is this Bill which brought to mind the comments made in Decembers Dogs NSW Journal.

I hate animals in the window of pet shops, but I also enjoy showing and breeding dogs, striving for perfection etc etc. How far can this bill reach??

    Hi M&C

Are you talking about the quote I put in my post about the puppy mill flyers?

Dogs NSW were joined in their opposition to this bill by some very unlikely other groups, including the AVA I think, and animal welfare groups. The Bill was not workable in the form it was in, would be easy for anyone with a little know-how to circumvent, but would make life very difficult indeed for small time registered breeders.

Yes your thread made me think of the Animals Regulation of Sale Bill or Pet Shop Bill.

I started a new thread because I wasn't sure if your thread was discussing the same bill or not??

The Bill was knocked back in Parliament months ago.

The topic is dead and done.

I imagine Clover Moore (Independant MP who created and submitted the Bill to Parliament in its first draft 3 years ago) will again try to get something through in NSW in the future however but this Bill is mute.

In the Frank Pieterse's report he does advise that the bill was defeated, I should of made that more clear (thanks Anne - by trying to make the post as short as possible I left out that important detail).

I guess what I'm trying to say is that I will be careful what I support because when it comes to politics you always have to read between the lines and I hope others will do the same because this is likely to be raised again.

I don't know the details of the bill, but it does sound like something I would personally back. In regards to where we would get dogs from - shelters and rescues. I'd support dog breeding being banned, not just breeding of purebreed dogs but all breeding, at least for some time until we have truly run out of dogs to rescue from the streets, pounds, and rescue groups. Just a personal opinion.
