Great, I didn't realise it was common as I hadn't seen any other pics of Amstaff's with 'sticky up' ears.

Just hope people won't think we have had her ears pinned up as she also has a stumpy tail from a birth defect and people think we have had her docked.

I don't really understand the "Woopty" phrase , would some one explain this please? Is this acceptable within the breed standard? Thanks

I think woopty just means when they are slightly hanging over, like one of Blue's ears in my signature pic, could be wrong but that is what I understood of woopty from the description given

    Hi Paws

Do you have documentation to show her stumpy tail is from a birth defect? The reason I am asking is...if a ranger sees her...you might get into "trouble"

    I can

When Staffies hit about 7 months...their head starts to "crack". With that I mean the distinct cleft on the top of their skull...their heads broaden too...their cheek bones develop etc

During this time...the ear set can go a bit "off". The picture of Sumo with his "woopty" ear is called a full drop ear and is undesirable in the breed. Half-pricked like Sumo's, pricked or rose-pricked like Miss Bella's are the desirable ear sets in a Staffordshire Bull Terrier.

Sumo's ear went like this 1 week before our big Specialty Show here in Newcastle, so we decided it was of no use to show him, because he would have been disregarded due to incorrect ears. He was also sick, so I didn't want to put him through any more stress at that point. His ear corrected itself after about 1 month... when he head had "cracked".

Ear sets can go "off" for many reasons...teething...ear problems like infection and yeast problems...allergies with itchy ears...a grass seed in the ear canal etc.

When we got Sumo...he had full drop...heavy ears. The cartilage wasn't very strong, so his ears were taped for about 2 weeks until the cartilage had become stronger. This was done from he was 8 weeks until he was 10 weeks. Taping/gluing only needs to be done in puppies with heavy full drop ears. Some SBT puppies are born with beautiful, tiny, "thin leather" rose-pricked ears. Ruby has never had her ears taped...see picture of her ears at 8 weeks and at 4 months. See pictures of Sumo's full drop ears and after taping.

LOL, i thought too, OMG shes so cute, she kinda looks like a big frenchie!

If your not showing her i wouldnt really worry about, One of Leos ears is "woopty" as Cles say, its so funny but kinda annoying when im taking pics and theres ALWAYS this ear looking like its going to fly off the side of his head

    Just a question clea .....

What would you call this ear set?

    Sid, Baileys brother.

Would it still be classed as rose prick - although they are slightly flatter?

He was only about 6mths old in this pic though - in case that matters

Angel has wonky ears too! lol

Trixie has such beautiful ears (IMO ). I worry that no future Amstaff I own will live up to them!!

But Oscars are my fave [even though they're not the preferred ear set for showies]. I think they're so stinkin' cute
