Good Natty! It is very funny

    WELL!
I wrote one of my friends an email attatched was the puppy mills write up that I copied from Mags. Plus a huge essay by me
She replied with a whole heap of STUPID stuff. Like, I want to know what my dogs history are, thats why I can't buy from a shelter. And that all breeders breed for money. And that the cute pups in the window deserve a chance to be happy. And some absolutely blood boiling rubbish.
Hmmm, so you know the history of pet shop puppies? So you give a crap about their parents?? And I gave her some links to some amazing breeders I know from another forum.
I told her about the breeder that brought her bitch in for an emergency C-section that cost $6,000 and only one puppy survived, which they kept.
Hmmm, now if they were breeding for money, you think they'd be pretty in debt wouldn't you.
    I finished it with...

    Mmmk then.
Its more than the puppies in the window.
    Its their parents.
If the pet shop don't sell them, they'd just end up in a shelter anyway.
If you don't mind, and can seriously say you would buy from a pet shop, even after knowing what Im saying, then theres nothing I can say to make you change your mind.
And make sure you check out those real breeders.

    I'm lost for words.

People are just so STUPID sometimes. I can imagine how frustrated you must feel Myf. Gotta ask yourself, do you really want these people as friends?

Wow that's really depressing, knowing you've given them all this info and they still basically say that it's all ok.

The thing is, even though many of her responses to your points are mass and unfair generalisations (such as breeders only breed for money), many of the points that animal welfare enthusiasts use to counter the debate against pet shops and others are also mass generalisations that are not fair.

As for ridding yourself of these friends, I find that suggestion a little off. Because someone holds a different opinion, it does not make them a bad person.

I have a friend who is hell bent on buying an 'oodle' and has been for the last 18 months or more. The family currently have a BC that is very, very old. He is not long for this life(even if you just base it on statistics, given he is about15 or 16) and their next dog will be an oodle. I have spoken to her at length about this. She is an educated woman, and works in a professional field. She is honest and loyal and holds the same values as me in most things. I will continue to try to educate her but I respect that afterall it is her decision on where she buys a dog from. At least now she is not buying it from a well known internet puppy farmer and she is also aware of what to look out for in a new pup, and what questions to ask.

I think im gonna have to agree to disagree with them.

Its nothing to stop being friends over. I mean, we're friends for a reason. For this one thing we disagree on, theres 10 others we do agree on.
If I don't talk to them about this subject, I love them to death!

There's this guy that has a cute white fluffy dog that he walks on my "afternoon" oval. And we had the discussion about getting it desexed, and why, and then he admits to having an undesexed cat.

He's got a couple of problems with it.
    1. he thinks it's cruel
    2. he can't tell his own balls from his pet's balls. Sigh. And I thought he was comfortable with his own sexuality because he's butch and he's walking a small white fluffy dog...

I countered 1. with how cruel it was for the offspring of his pets to live without any responsible owner. And how cruel it will be if his dog gets hurt trying to get to a bitch on heat. And how cruel it will be if his dog gets testicular cancer or something.

Number 2 - is more difficult but I did point out that his balls are not his pets balls, and if he fathers unwanted children, we have a social security system for them, but if his pets do, they get put to sleep if they don't starve to death or get eaten by other unwanted pets.

Hopefully he'll think about it and do a bit of internet reseach and have a chat with the vet about it - he's done all the right things regards fleas and vaccinations etc. Forgotten to register his dog, - I reminded him he gets a discount if it is desexed...

Sigh. Some people just don't think things through at all.
