Yep...enclosed with entrance...but my dogs crates are "enclosed" with an entrance to and they love their crates.

We have a kennel on our back porch incase I have a rescue that goes out the dog door and can't get back in. My two boys will lay in there the odd occassion, but more often they prefer their lounge which they access through the dog door. The cat uses it more frequently than any of the dogs do. SHe loves sitting in there.

I have found over the years that most dogs will not use a kennel that is placed too far away from the back door. If you have it right next to the door, they will.

The easiest way to train a dog to use a kennel is with food. If the kennel has a removeable top, take it off and leave it off until the pup readily accepts going into the kennel to eat a treat. Then encourage them with the lid on and treats again. They soon learn that going into the kennel is a good thing as they will associate it with the treats.

Anne, the kennel (if I buy one) would be placed directly outside the back door, up against the wall so it would be literally a foot or so away from where we step out onto the back deck.

The one I'm looking at does have a hinged flip-top roof too.

I've never had any problem with dogs using kennels at the back door in years past, but the breeders comments worried me, as I don't wish to waste money.
Also if I go out I want a place where she can retreat from sun, heat and wind etc, and I don't think in hindsight a crate would suffice for that.

When I'm not working from home our dogs are in runs during the day [our garden's not 100% secure and I don't want to risk them fighting over the kongs]. They sleep in their kennels. I video taped them one day. They go into them as soon as they've finished breakfast and stay in there sleeping most of day. If the weather's fine Angel might redecorate her run so she can lie outside! lol

Ziggy never uses her kennel. She will go in to get a bone if I've put it in there, but she's never slept in it and never goes into it on her own. Our cat has used it more than she has! (I have a photo of him sitting in there one rainy day).

I have a traditional wooden kennel out the back near our sliding door. I also have other forms of bedding for the to sleep on outside as well as full access to indoors if they wish.

Bailey loves the kennel and other than being cuddled up with me on the couch she prefers the kennel.

Mully and Tyson both prefer their "hammock" type beds rather than the kennel.

    No Idea Why Though???!!!!

this is all very interesting to me, as we fully intended to buy a small kennel for little Nelson to use when we are away from home for longer than an hour or so and can't take him with us. this makes me wonder if he will use it, and they are not cheap.

(if we can have him back of course)

I have an old wooden Kennel near my bedroom window. From memory I think Shads used it a few times, Blacky never did and Pretty prefers in the dirt, on the lawn, under the house or being inside. The cats use it though.

Any posts made under the name of Di_dee1 one can be used by anyone as I do not give a rats.

Our guys have never had a kennel, they sleep inside, have done since night number 1. Molly and Jack were super easy toilet training wise, and Mia has a crate that we got when she was a baby. They all sleep in the bedroom with us, Mia in her crate (we have given her the option to sleep out of it, but she seems to prefer it now, and Jack and Molly have an old couch that they sleep on (both in our bedroom). My babies aren't spoilt much! :P
