The people on bird forums are the same as us in thoughts. Go to a breeder or a rescue.

    There are bird rescues?

I just keep imagining something from Dr. Dolittle...

Well you see, there goes to show...I know bugger all about birds. If I ever wanted to buy one I'd just go straight to the local pet shop. Wouldn't even think twice about looking to buy one somewhere else.

Target the problem areas together, and a change may happen.

Don't pet shops often also sell rats, mice, rabbits, birds and guinea pigs? Do all ppl who hate the thought of pet shops selling puppies and kittens also feel the same way about other animals?
    Good point DA,

If I had kids who wanted Guinea Pigs (lets hope I don't!!LOL!) I'd probably think first of getting them from a pet store... And where else do you get mice or hermit crabs from??? (I'm probably leaving myself open here to be shot down by all guinea pig/mice/hermit crab enthusiasts!!)

Lol. No seriously Newfienut, you can't be shot down for asking the question. I'm asking it too.

We used to have guinea pigs and they came from a breeder. Fantastic lady, all the support and advice we ever needed and more. Plus they were the shocking price of $10 each with papers and full background. At the same time Pet's Paradise was selling sickly looking little crossbred ones for $35!!

Hermit crab are another story. The last time I got some from a pet shop years ago I looked into where they come from and read that they don't breed well in captivity and most are taken from the wild. I don't know if that's true but it sounds pretty ordinary!

There are lots of bird rescues and good breeders about. Some shelters have birds too - unclaimed strays, surrenders etc. Some really amazing birds... Both my gorgeous Cockatiels are shelter birds - awesome family pets!

ETA - shelters and rescues often have mice, rats and ferrets too. As well as rabbits. Pet rescue will have them online, as well as other reputable groups.

I spent $35 on my guinea pig, Zues Natty!
My bunny Bambi was incredibly lonely so I did it as quick as I could.
Plus, you don't see guinea pigs in shelters. Rabbits though, that a different story.

They have guinea pigs in the RSPCA shelter here, Myf. I saw them when I bought my cat a few weeks ago. I asked if that was normal, and they said yep, they get guinea pigs a LOT!

My local one NEVER have them.
I meet a lot of the animals that are at our shelter and I have only met 2!

Yep, guinea pigs at RSPCA Canberra as well. They get everything there - even goldfish sometimes!

Don't get me wrong Myf, $35 isn't a huge outlay if it is a treasured pet. But the health of so many pet shop piggies is woeful, they seem to get no vitamin C supplied and are often weedy and unwell looking.
