Oh my, he's a real cutie, looks like a silky cross from the photo.

The main thing is to have patience, sounds like you have that in buckets. Allow him to settle in, go about your routine as normal, and try not to fuss over him too much (as hard as that may be), let him observe and get a "feel" for you and the home. Sounds like he feels safe under the desk (would be like a little cave for him), so let him sleep there if it doesn't inconvenience you too much. At night, can you confine him to the laundry or bathroom? I find the smaller the area the less likely they are to wee and poo everywhere. Crate training is also a great option. If you can take him out in the middle of the night to begin with it will help.During the day take him out every hour or two, gradually extending the period, he may start heading outside by himself once he gets the idea. Don't worry that he's not a puppy, any dog can be house-trained no matter what age.

Get him desexed, it may not stop the marking, but the smell won't be so bad, and (in my personal opinion) it's the resposible thing to do. AND microchipped!

The vet should be able to give you a ball park age ie 1-3, 6-8etc, based on the condition of the dog's teeth and eyes (however there is room for error as some little dogs' teeth are shocking even at a young age).

He'll come out of his shell a lot over the next week or so, I look forward to reading about his progress.

thank you greysaregreat.. we considered confining him to the garage overnight (it opens onto the kitchen, so it's not as bad as it might sound, and we had a baby gate at that doorway first night as he smelled so incredibly bad!) but we just couldn't do it. yes, we are wimps. lol... but looks like we have had a good night, unless my husband cleaned up before he went to work an hour ago. altho, we were both up around 1am, lol! and we took Nelson outside then, and he did his business like a good doggie should. i know my guy would have taken him out when he got up, and i took him out when i got up too. we have been going outside every couple of hours over the weekend, and sometimes Nelson just looks at us like we are crazy! but mostly he trots around the backyard and lifts his leg all over the place.. he's pretty smart, and got the hang of the catdoor fast. one thing i have really appreciated, is so far he has not marked the carpet at all, he's stopped at the tiled area.

we fully intend on neutering, vaccinations, chipping, registering, etc soon. it's the end of our pay month.. and it's entirely the wrong month for vet bills of course, altho, it's always the wrong month for vet bills isn't it? it's the electricity bill i am dreading even more..

vet was not sure, thought he was not a pup, and not an old dog either, said his teeth were very good, anywhere from 3-5 maybe younger... but also said she really could not be sure with any guess on age. but that was only a quick look, as we had only had him clipped by an assistant there, and maybe once we take him for a good check all over, and the neutering etc, we might know more.

he can sleep under my desk for all time if that is where he wants to be.

anyone know please... he seems to be leaking from the eyes, can see a track down either side of his face, is not so patient when i want to clean it with a wet cotton ball, altho i will keep trying that as it gets a little crusty.. is that just a breed thing? or something i should worry about?

With the eye leakage, it could be a breed thing, a nerves thing, a worms thing... I would ask your vet when you take him in next.

Sounds like Nelson is settling in well!

the eye thing is not worse at any rate, and each day i have had him stand and be wiped with a wet cotton ball, he is starting to accept the fact that i will have my way on this regardless of whether he likes it or not. so each day so far he has stood and allowed me to wipe for a few seconds more before he pulls away.. one day i will get it all! yes, i will ask the vet, altho his eyes look good, and i think it's just water, not anything else more sinister. he needs to get used to this before all the hair grows back!

    hello loren.
