    Default Giving Up

I'm really not sure what to do...

Ever since I was 15 (I am 23 now) I have wanted a Brown Newfoundland and name him Ferrero. Now that I am at an age where I can keep and look after my own dog, I have been on the search for my little man.

For 2 years I have been on waiting lists, but my boy never came.

Now I have found a 'breeder' that will give me my long awaited pup, but I have only heard bad things about him. I say "breeder" as he breeds Newfoundlands, but he isn't registered. If I knew that I would get my boy 100% then I wouldn't have a problem, I would wait (unpatiently), but I have heard that on one occassion the buyer had paid for the pup but never received it. He has since explained to us why and it sounded like a very genuine and caring (on the pups behalf) answer...Do I take the chance? To me, he sounds like a legit and genuine man, but why would so many people say so many bad things about him?

My problem at first was trying to find a breeder that would have brown litters. Now I have a new problem...I've moved to Cairns! I was told that it would be hard to find a breeder that would be willing to sell a newf pup to someone that lives past Brisbane. Totally understandable! But there are ways around it. I see so many people up here with Huskies and Malamutes, so obviously it can't be that bad? Obviously I wouldn't be walking him in the middle of the day! Hell, even I don't want to be out in the middle of the day lol

I know that I made the decision to move to Cairns, but I only came from Airlie Beach which isn't much different, weather wise.

Do I keep searching for the dog I have wanted and waited for the last 8 years, or do I count my losses and *sob* look for another breed?

Well Ferrero, you know my take on this, so I won't go into any of that here in public.

Only YOU can know whether to give up or not. Did you find that breeder in Darwin? Get's darned hot up there, I would think?

You were first basing your decision on a colour, which is your choice, but perhaps you need to look at why you would only consider a particular colour in a dog or breed?

Now you have the heat issue, but as you have said, there are some breders who you can purchase from without a problem regarding your location and the climate etc. So I guess that's your call, and only you can make that decision.

$2700 for an unpapered dog bred from a dishonest person is desperate IMO, and I think you need to look at all the original reasons you want a Newfie. *hugs to you*

You have alifetime of having dogs ahead of you. I'd give up the Newfie and think of it as a prize to keep waiting for in your future. There is no way I would be an unregistered dog from this person and for that price.

I agree with all above. Also, Newfie in Darwin is a bit cruel IMO.

    Thanks for your replies guys!

I'm hearing what you are all saying, and deep down I know it's right, but I just wanted to give it one last shot...So I called the lady I was on the waiting list for last year. She told me that she wasn't breeding for another 2 years (I assume because of what happened with the last litter). Fair enough. She also told me to stay away from this man and that he is bad news. I will be asking him to take me off the the list

The breeder I spoke to lives in QLD, and she gave me the number of a breeder in Darwin as she has browns. I called the number yesterday and the person who answered said there was nobody by that name here , so I will send her an email.
I asked her what her thoughts were on having a newfie this far north and she basically said that if you are responsible about it, then there shouldn't be any problems. She said that they will adjust.

If it's another dead end with this lady, as hard as it will be, I will forget about newfies for the time being. I was looking at the dogzonline list of breeds to see if there was anything else I was interested in, but I couldn't find anything

I've never been without a dog for this long and it's starting to takes it's toll on me *cries*

I do know what it is like to have a dream and see it fall to pieces, it is especially hard too when a head over heart decision has to be made. I hope so much it will come true for you in the future. Hang onto the dream, do not let it go. Just put it in it's own area for now. Hugs

    Hi Ferrero

Have you maybe considered other breeds?

I personally think having a long-haired dog like a Newfoundland in that climate might be a bit much.

Yeah, I'm looking at the dogzonline breed list again and trying to think of other dog breeds I know.

It's difficult trying to find a breed that I like looks wise and requirements wise. The only other dog I have been interested in is a Maremma, but they aren't really suitable either

I like my big dogs! What can I say

Maybe some of you could suggest some breeds to me?
