    Default Need Advice Please Guys!

    Hey all.....

OK, I need some help with something I've never had to deal with before.

On Wednesday just gone, I gave the dogs a spot on flea treatment, and then about 3am on Thursday morning, Jack woke me up scratching and itching and just basically seemed uncomfortable. I came out into the lounge with him and noticed he'd broken out in hives/welts all over him. Not knowing what they were, I guess I over reacted slightly and took him to the 24 hour emergency vet to get him looked at (I guessed it was an allergic reaction, and didn't know how bad it could get). They gave him a shot of cortosone (sp?) and a shot of anti inflams, and the vet suggested it could be an insect bite, if it was the flea stuff she said she'd have expected it to come up sooner (I gave it to them about 8.30pm). $200 later, we came home and the hives seemed to go down without an issue.

All seemed fine, he's eating normally etc, until this morning, he woke me up scratching and rubbing at his face, and his face is now all swollen, I called our normal vet, and they told me to give him a Telfast tablet and made me an appointment for later on today. I have given him one, and he's sleeping at the moment, I'm just really worried.

Has anyone ever experienced anything like this before? Any ideas on what could be causing it?

Now for those who dont know, Jack is an 18 month old Lab x, he weighs 42kg, but is very lean and other than the normal stuff (vacc, microchip, desexing etc) he's never needed to go to the vet for anything, he's been very healthy.

    Thanks in advance guys

This is my Jack, as you can see, he's not a fat dog or anything lol

I have no advice as I have no experience with this. Is this the first time he has had the spot on? I do not know if it can accumulate and suddenly cause a reaction when it didn't at other times if it has been used before. Has he been in any new environment? Done any gardening, new plants? Anything changed? Food etc. Sorry I can not be of more help but I bet someone else may be able to. Hugs.

First time for the spot on stuff, which is why it was my first thought.... vet seemed to think not though, which surprised me a bit.

Nothing else has changed, I don't garden lol.... I'm assuming some of the trees/plants around may have bloomed though, and we moved in Feb of this year, so we weren't here this time last year....

Diet hasn't changed, we have been to a dog park, but that was a good couple of weeks ago.... So if it was that, I would have expected a reaction sooner, but who knows....

    Its all very confusing!

Hmmm, first time with the spot on and no other changes would, to untrained me have some correlation. You are giving anti histamine though which should contain any problems. Maybe ring a couple of vets for their opinions?

Found this, I wonder if he is reacting to a flea bite from before the spot on was used.

The most common skin allergy that affects dogs is flea bite allergy. Flea Allergy Dermatitis (FAD) typically results in a sparse, dry hair coat at the base of the tail with itchiness more severe in this area.

Dogs with FAD only need one flea bite to start the allergic reaction so you may not notice that your dog has fleas. Comb your dog, especially over the back and tail area, onto a dampened sheet of white paper. Black dots that turn red on contact with the moisture are actually flea faeces, which contain dried blood.

Am bored so I am googling, I so far can not see anywhere the symptoms (hives) that you are describing having anything to do with flleas, your vet may be right and you may have to look elsewhere for the culprit. Any idea what is blooming in your garden, grasses etc that spring may have brought up?

I am sure this has been discussed here before, maybe a search of threads may help.

Having an allergic dog here...it sounds like a contact allergy to me. I have seen the hives...the scratching etc. We have found out Sumo is HIGHLY allergic to agapanthus and possibly buffalo grass. The problem is...if it is a contact it could be anything

Ahh poo to that lol! I just spoke to the vet again, as its been about an hour now, and the swelling has only gone down a tiny bit, and his armpits are still bright red. She said to give him till midday and if we haven't seen a vast improvement to keep the appointment (it's at 1.30pm today)...

Cleasanta, how did you work out what it was that Sumo was actually allergic too??

Thats what the vet on Thursday morning suggested, I haven't seen any around, and he hadn't been outside since last toilet stop last night.... I dunno!
