Thread: What's Happened to Our Friendly Forum?

Question What's Happened to Our Friendly Forum?

    Hi Everyone,

I thought I'd ask us all to think about the question above...

Most of us have seen a few topics in the last few days/weeks that have become heated and resulted in rude, insensitive, vulgar comments.

Yes. We all have our own opinions and beliefs on different topics, it's only natural. I personally believe that more effort should be made to 'accept' difference of opinion and not 'attack' difference of opinion.

It saddens me to know, that some members feel intimidated, put-off or scared to post, reply or ask questions. What I find even more disappointing, is that a few members have left, and a few are considering leaving.

I hope that we may continue to educate and etertain each other in a friendlier manner.

    Best wishes
    Mags

I am happy to be here.. If I feel a topic is getting heated, I simply dont post there..
I regularly visit 4 forums that are friendly and welcoming. There are others I no longer visit due to misunderstandings or difference of opinions that I feel just got way out of hand, or the atmosphere has changed for the worse..
All in all, it does'nt matter to me, as there are always more forums to find !!

I agree with both Mags and Mitte, sometimes I link onto a particular topic and I don't like or don't agree with what is being said, but I don't post. I don't think there is any reason to leave a forum because of a difference of opinion though. I wouldn't move house or work if I had a disagreement with one of my neighbours or a work mate. I would avoid them if it was that bad or attempt to resolve it if it wasn't. I think (which has been said on here a few times) that sometimes the written word comes out a little harsher then a spoken word does, sarcasm does not travel as well nor does the little niggles. Some people post before thinking of the consequences some people post regardless. If you are not happy with something somebody says than I believe IMO that it should be turned over to PM's or you just let it go. If something was said about me I would try to fix it but I wouldn't lose sleep over it and I wouldn't leave because of it.

It's very distressing when the name calling & "attitude" starts to come out. I've learned from other forums not to take it all too seriously & just stay out of it where I can. Heaps more I could say, but it's just not worth it ... just in case I get "flamed".

Beats me, I am on a few different forums not dog related and apart from the odd one or two debates getting heated, thats all they are, debates.
Dog forums are one of the worst for slamming opinions down throats IMO.

Try bird forums, lol. One of mine is far worse. Beats me why people think that attacking can educate and that the only right opinion is their own.

Often happens when lots of new and passionate members arrive.

I admit I've probably contributed a bit, but it's a bit hard when thin skinned people show up and perceive anything that disagrees with them or questions their opinion as an attack and then post stuff that "attacks" back.

It's also a problem on a busy forum with few moderators, ie the rules of polite conversation and language don't get enforced, and there are always trolls who push the limits looking for a bite. It doesn't help that people quote these posts either. Report the dodgy post, don't quote it.

The words are only on a screen arent they -- either ignore or just dont reply. I have seen a dam good forum closed down because of this and i really would not like to see it happen again. Plus I'm too dam old & have much more important things to do now days that bitch on a forum.
