    Default Is This Normal?

I wonder if others here have observed the same unusual behaviour about their dog.
    1) Mimi plays tug of war but never growls. She does it silently whilst the other dogs growl loudly.
    2) When I put her food down, she looks at me first as if to say "now you can go" and watch me go. She will only eat when no one is around.
    4) Mimi will not touch her food even if outside when Pepsi is looking at her from the inside.
    3) When I give her fresh meat to eat, she will only start eating it if I sit next to her and pat her. She does the same with a bone. Almost as if she needs reassurance that it is ok to eat it.
    4) When she has finished eating fresh meat, she gets this "guilty" look and runs to hide under the bed.
Would Pepsi be the cause of this food behaviour? The moment Pepsi appears, Mimi takes off with the tail between her legs. I am sure Pepsi sends "beware or else" signals to her.
Kirby the GR is nothing like this. He just doesn't care who is around when there is food, he will eat it no matter what!

No idea, sorry, I know shads would not do a poo if anyone was watching him. Individual dog idiosyncrasies maybe?

She's not a sighthound is she? It all sounds pretty normal to me...

My old afghan would never eat if anyone was watching - dog or human.

My borzoi plays tug of war silently, and if the others do - which is a bit rare but it does happen sometimes - they don't make a sound either. If they play together they are a bit more vocal but not really a whole lot.

And the guilty, or reassuring with food thing sounds like a saluki... They are real princesses with food.

Wow, I've never met such a shy dog before.

Frosty sometimes she growls and sometimes she doesn't. I usually play growl friendly.

    2) When I put her food down, she looks at me first as if to say "now you can go" and watch me go. She will only eat when no one is around.

Frosty is the opposite. She likes me to stand where she can see me, just in case I try to leave - in which case the food suddenly loses all its appeal.

    4) Mimi will not touch her food even if outside when Pepsi is looking at her from the inside.
Frosty will happily eat her food anywhere - so long as I stay still where she can see me - in the same space, inside the house when she's outside is not good enough. It helps if I make sure other dogs don't try to get in on the food action because Frosty just gives it up then.

    3) When I give her fresh meat to eat, she will only start eating it if I sit next to her and pat her. She does the same with a bone. Almost as if she needs reassurance that it is ok to eat it.
Takes Frosty a while to get going on a raw bone. No idea why.

    4) When she has finished eating fresh meat, she gets this "guilty" look and runs to hide under the bed.
Frosty wouldn't fit under my bed. Sometimes she does the rolling on the persian rug and wiping her mouth thing - but no sense of guilt involved at all. And not when she brings the yukky raw bone in and eats it on the carpet either. I blame my mudgee friends for that particular corruption, they didn't mind dogs eating raw bones on the carpet. I think it's very unhygienic.

Thanks Natty, you reassure me. Not sure about sighthound but for sure a hound!!! Great at tracking and chasing ducks!!
Lisa. Mimi is a very confident dog. People always comment on how confident she is. I think that she has a resident "Mistress" in Pepsi and Mimi is scared to move a paw if Pepsi disapproves (I am sure she signals or something).
Hyacinth. Mimi doesn't clean her mouth on the carpet, she just comes in from the garden after she finished and with head bent, ears back and tail low, she sheepishly, almost tippy toes straight upstairs under the bed. This happens only when she has her raw meat and bone (Mid Loin Lamb). She doesn't do it when she has chicken necks, bits of beef or bits of veal. Only when it is bone with meat on it.
I guess like Di_dee1 says it is dog idiosynchresis.
