The pres of the pitbull club is on TV right now and is doing nothing to promote the breed - he is just side stepping questions and suggesting - to me as a viewer - that the government is justified in its new laws. The interview did NOTHING to promote the breed.

The experience I had with the PB Club and the EDBA was about the same Occy. I am sad to say that is why I withdrew from the cause.

Well, in this case...it's the owners fault for their dog roaming the streets and not registered. It's just a normal rule in all states for all dog owners to follow. Sure, they wont kill other dogs like they are stating here...but these (or any dog) shouldn't be unreg and roaming the streets in the first place.

Would Police and security dogs be reported on a dog attack register like that?
    Does anyone know? I'm curious..lol

The way I see it is that Even if the PBT is bred out of Australia you'll see just as many attacks, The idiots that owned the PBTs will move onto other breeds and destroy them too. Owner education would be the best prevention.

I know 16 year olds with their first dog and not a single clue as to how to raise it.

The bite stats on GSDs are higher because there are more GSds in the community than any other breed. No different to years ago when the Standard Fox Terrier was the most popular , Foxies were the number one dog for bites. The same when Labs , Collies and Cattle dogs were at the top of the list.

I agree there needs to be more education out there but there also needs to be more legislation against idiots from ever owning a dog again , like the owner of this PB who has done the damage today. He needs to be banned from ever owning a dog again and imo he should be put in prison for being so damned irresponsible towards the community as well as the dog.

Puggerup and Mal -72, you both talk absolute sense in regard to PBs.

They don't. Those statistics are compiled from Council records of attacks that are reported or investigated only. Records of attacks reported to and investigated by police are not included as they have a different recording system that does not link up with local councils (remember Local & State Government agencies are very separate).

Working dog attacks are not included as they are not recorded as attacks. Recorded attack means unlawful attacks, and working Police, Corrective Services, Defence (and that is Federal govt...) and licensed Security dogs are covered by legislation so their attacks are lawful.

    Make sense?

So like any official statistics they are only worth as much as whatever they are printed on. Out of date before they are published, and collated from very narrow sources.

I think it comes back to something like the licensing issue. It's the people that are attracted to pitbulls that are bringing the breed into disrepute. Lets not forget that German Shepherds were banned - one of the original BSL disasters. It was the devoted people who were prepared to risk it all by keeping their beloved breed underground and persisting in breeding them for the breed's betterment that means we have our beautiful Sheps around today.

I thought blue heelers were pretty high on a list. Supposedly third most vicious or dangerous breed in Aus. No one has told thatto any I have known though.
