Im only asking because i often refer to them as Staffy's but don't want to offend owners etc...

    TIA (and sorry for hijacking!)

TBH i hate the word staffy, imo its degrading to my beloved breed, i feel it's a word that's often associated with "i got a tough dog" type of owner, you know the ones, the type that are scumbags & often have a SBT for the wrong reasons, tough image, dog fighting etc, & that's not something i want my SBT or me to be associated with.
When ever people stop me in public & ask ?? or make a comment about my "staffy", my 1st response is, no he's not a "staffy", he is a Staffordshire Bull Terrier.

I personally use the words SBT'S, Stafford's or Staffordshire Bull Terriers & prefer my dog to be addressed as SBT, Stafford or Staffordshire Bull Terrier.

Come on Deb, I think thats being a little dramatic don't you think?
Is it not like the American Pit Bull Terrier being shortened to Pit Bull?

Most people I know wouldn't recognize the initials SBT though. I guess owners would...but it's just not something I ever got used to saying. And to be honest I'm not keen on saying the mouthful of the full name each time I see one (there are a few in my neighborhood). I never really associated the word "staffy" with dog fighting or the big macho owners. I think I'll just keep saying it, never really met anyone in person who minded before. But I respect your views and if we should ever meet I'll be sure to say SBT! Thanks for the explanation

I too call them staffys, Labs labs, my ACD a heeler. I feel it is just a short affectionate form of address.

No i honestly don't think that i'm being a little dramatic at all... next time you happen to notice a post of mine on any topic about SBT'S, or pic comments about SBT'S, please take note on what i address them as, bet i rarely address them as "staffy's" compared to the amount i address as SBT'S or Staffords.

Staffy is the affectionate shortening of their name yes, but I think it has developed a whole lot of sometimes negative connotations... Particulary with regard to Staffords being owned and bred by people with regard only to them looking tough. So some owners and breeders don't like the nickname.

Interesting,... I'll be completely honest here! and say that until i joined this forum i had no idea of their "official" name, i've always known them as staffys (not had much to do with the breed though obviously!)

I too call them staffys, Labs labs, my ACD a heeler. I feel it is just a short affectionate form of address.
Im the same, a Labrador is a lab, my GSD is a shepherd, SBT's staffys, and i'll even do the unthinkable and call a malumute a husky to my daughter (not to confuse her)...

Don't underestimate your daughter's ability for understanding. Malamutes and Siberians are from different continents - different sides of the world! It's like calling a basenji a dingo because they look and behave a little similarly...

No I have noticed that. I mean your reasoning for your dislike for the term 'staffy' I see as a little dramatic.

So what did you think about the Pit Bull comparison?
